Belquist wins four titles, breaks two of Carlson's state marks

New Rockford-Sheyenne sophomore Kelsie Belquist had Class B track legendary status in her sights Thursday-Saturday, May 26-28.

Belquist won four individual state championships in the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, 200 and 400-meter dashes at the State Track Meet from the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck.

In the process, she shattered two Class B records belonging to 19-time state champion Whitney (Carlson) Bruins, who ran for Carrington from 2001-06.

In the 300-meter hurdle preliminaries, Belquist ran a time of 42.02 seconds, which bested Carlson's 42.26 mark, and also set the new standard in the 200 finals of 24.63, .32 faster than the old record of 24.95.

Her 300-meter hurdle record is now the Community Bowl record, Class B and overall record.

She finished as the 400 winner in 57.83 seconds (57.08 in the preliminaries) and took the 100 hurdles in 14.95 (14.77 prelims).

Her 40 points allowed the Rockets to place fourth overall in the girls' team standings, just one point from third and seven from runner-up status.

Kelsie is the daughter of Elliott and Beth Belquist of New Rockford.
