Bid awarded for Cathay school demolition

This drone photo, captured by Cathay High School graduate Steve Irmen, shows the aftermath of the destruction of the south wall of the gymnasium, which spontaneously gave way in August. Painted cinder blocks and exterior brickwork lies strewn along the grass. Since the time the photo was taken, the area has been cleared, and some of the blocks have been pushed into the hole in the wall to create a crude barrier around the decaying structure.
The Cathay School complex, vacant since the closure of the 1979-80 school year and used sporadically for community functions for a period of time afterwards, has been marked for demolition since last December.
