From the Past: Two vehicles reported stolen

75 Years Ago

December 4, 1947

Since last Thursday, the Carrington Fire Department was called to two fires, one in the Sylvan Lee home at midnight Thanksgiving Day, and the other in the A.D. Matheny building on Main Street Monday at about 11 a.m.

The Carrington High School Cardinals met their second straight defeat at New Rockford Tuesday night, losing to the Rockets 24 to 21 in a ragged contest which saw the Cardinals make a pitiful showing in the first half. Coming back in the second half the cards outplayed Eddy County but could not overcome the early Rocket lead.

Osbourne T. Belsheim director of music in Carrington High School was chairman of the program at the Kiwanis session Wednesday and he presented several girl students in a musical program. Before they performed, he spoke on musical education. Presenting musical numbers were the girls’ trio. Beverly Brennan, Irene Steinman and Betty Turner, who sang “One Fleeting Hour.” Betty Fornshell was at the piano, Lola Sommars sang “How So Fair”, from the opera “Martha,” and Beverly Kriewald played two clarinet solos, “Lieberstraum,” and “Clarinet Polka.”

Nuptial vows were spoken by Dolores Ann Short of Carrington, and Rudolph Parnell Edwardson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Edwardson, also of Carrington on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, in Trinity Lutheran Church at 4:30 p.m. Rev. E. E. Lang officiated at the double ring ceremony.

50 Years Ago

December 6, 1972

Before the formal program at last week’s Carrington Kiwanis Club meeting, special recognition was given to members 65 years and over. Special mention was given to J.C. Hoffert and Dr. F.B. Peik, both charter members. Other senior members given recognition were Otto W. Klindworth, Howard Wolle, A.H. Felchle, Harry M. Knott and Theo. Ramsey. J.A. Gilje introduced the honored members.

An Army veterinarian from Glenfield, Capt. Eric Munson, boarded a Boeing 727 to make his veterinary calls in Japan. Capt. Munson is a member of the U.S. Army Veterinary Activity based in Yokohama, Japan.

Dale Linderman, Carrington farmer, was endorsed by 14th Legislative District democrats, Monday evening, to run for the House in the special election Jan. 12.

Al Larson’s Cardinal wrestlers opened the new season. They won their first season dual match with Jamestown, and junior high squads won two exhibition matches during the week. The exhibitions were with Jamestown junior high and the Finley wrestling team.

CHS winners in the Jamestown match were Doug Zink, Paul Straley, Ray Haman, Doug Hicks, Kelly Lund, Bill Voglewede, Jim Cook, Dave Kling and Pete Gudmundson. Pat Copenhaver won in the 158 class by forfeit and there was no match in the 168 pound class.

Airman Kevin A. Sebastian of Carrington has been assigned to Chanute, AFB, Ill., after completing Air Force basic training.

A workshop was held for special education committee members, administrators, teachers and parents from Foster, Eddy and Wells counties in Carrington to discuss the importance of making special education mandatory in North Dakota.

December 8, 1997

Two vehicles have been reported stolen in Carrington recently. A 1990 white Chevy Lumina van belonging to Brenda Stokes of Carrington and a blue 1988 Oldsmobile was reported stolen from the Lee and Bev Manley residence.

FFA receives gold in National Dairy Foods placing 8th in the National FFA Dairy Foods Career Development Event held in Kansas City, Mo. Team members included Gaylene Goter, Sara Vande Hoven, Colette Lemer, Carisa Seiler, and J.R. Penas. Mr. Joel Lemer, advisor. Colette and J.R. earned gold individual awards, while Gaylene and Carisa earned silver awards.

Jim Harmon of Carrington was elected president of the North Dakota Farm Bureau at the 55th annual meeting in Bismarck.

New arrivals - Walker Carr, born Nov. 24 at the Carrington Health Center, he is the son of Brian and Heather Carr.

Sharon Zwinger, director of CHC telemedicine met with Sen. Bryon Dorgan and Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia over the Dakota Telemedicine System. They discussed rural health care and how important it is keeping quality care. Sen. Rockefeller serves on the national committee that decides what Medicare will cover.
