From the Past: Chief Wheeler extinguishes car fire

75 Years Ago

December 18, 1947

A motor fire in the Woodrow Topp car parked on Main Street here Tuesday forenoon was quickly extinguished by fire Chief F.K. Wheeler, who used a hand operated extinguisher. The car was damaged slightly. It was fortunate the fire did not make headway for a baby was sleeping in the backseat of the car.

Officers elected at the annual meeting of the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church on Thursday of last week were E.A. Roach, president; Sylvan Lee, trustee; Harold Schultz, treasurer; Paul Froelich, finance secretary and Russell Schutt, secretary.

Robert J. Des Roches, formerly of Rolla, has recently become a partner of S.J. Hoffman, McHenry, in the business formerly known as Hoffman Implement Service. Under the partnership the firm name will be Hoffman-DesRoches Implement Co.

Stanley Pladsen of Glenwood, Minn., arrived here last week to assume temporary management of the Gamble stores, and recently has been associated with the store in Glenwood.

A scraping basketball team from Anamoose defeated the Cardinals on their own floor 27-28 last Friday night. The cardinals jumped into an early 2-0 lead but could not hold back Anamoose.

Miss Ruth Naekel, an employee of Bell Telephone the past five years and the past year in Valley City office, has assumed duties as evening chief operator in the Carrington telephone office, it was announced this week by C.W. Yoder, manager.

Children of Carrington and the entire trade area will be guests of the Junior Chamber of Commerce when the annual Santa Claus Day is to be held on Saturday, Dec. 20. Ed A. Johnson, chairman made arrangements for the day, and said Santa Claus will be here on schedule.

For the fifth time in the last five legislative sessions, Rep. Bryce Streibel, a soft-spoken Fessenden farmer, has been elected republican floor leader for the N.D. House of Representatives.

The tax bill on Foster County real estate and special taxes that apply for 1972 have been figured by George E. Walton, county auditor, and the totals show a slight increase in both valuations and the total taxes over a year ago.

One of the bigger events at Carrington Livestock Sales, Inc. occurred Dec. 12, when Bruce Larson of the L-B Ranch near Sheyenne held his annual production sale. Larson sold 356 Herefords and black-white faced cattle.

Airman Joseph A. Straley of Carrington has been assigned to Lowry AFB, Colo., after completing Air Force basic training.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Jereezek, Winona, Minn., announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Beth to Mark Allen Swart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell D. Swart, Carrington. A June wedding is planned.

Gary E. Erickson of McHenry is one of several students at Mayville State College who were awarded scholarships for the 1972-73 academic year.

Mrs. Art Erfle and Mrs. Richard Jones, Heaton, attended the Christmas meeting of the Central Wells Homemakers Club, Wednesday evening at the Gil Arusell home. Potluck Mexican lunch was served.

Mrs. Stan Sampson, Brantford, celebrated her birthday Monday. Greeters were Mr. and Mrs. Key Williams, Mrs. Joe Anderson, Warren Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Casper Vetter, Jr.

A girl was born December 13, at Carrington Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hambrick.

Lyle Black of McHenry was awarded the degree of B.S. in Education by Valley City State College at the end of the fall quarter.

The Chamber of Commerce welcomes Tim and George Aljets to their new business, A and A Welding.

The Good Shepherd Foundation is currently doing a mail appeal to raise funds to build a heated garage and ambulance entrance for the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.

Keith Idland and Joyce Penas, Carrington, were the two lucky winners of the December 13 drawing for the Carrington’s “Stash of Cash.” They both claimed their winnings at Super Valu Foods.

Andrew Fettig, a seventh grade student at Sykeston Public School, won the school-level competition of the National Geography Bee on Dec. 15.

Montana-Dakota Utilities Co. has filed for a price decrease of approximately $.64/decatherm with the North Dakota Public Service Commission. “It dropped from the wholesale prices we pay for our gas supplies combined with a small decrease in pipeline charges.“ stated president and chief executive officer of Montana-Dakota, Ronald D. Tipton.

The decrease reflects a national downward trend in whole gas prices driven by this winter’s mild temperatures.

Kyle and Kristy Hewitt of Valley City are the proud parents of a girl, Morgan Eloise. 7 lbs. 8 oz. She was born at the Jamestown Hospital.

Cardinal wrestlers claimed two championships and the team finished in fifth place at the annual Carrington Invitational Wrestling Tournament on December 13. Mike Skadberg and Dustin Garber won championships while the Cards placed only one at second place, Nick Sauby.

Linda Hamm of Minneapolis, Minn. was in Washington D.C. for the Kennedy Center Honors. She was a guest of Swedish opera Tenor Hakon Hagegard. Mr. Hamm is a graduate of Glenfield-Sutton High School and the daughter of the John Halvorsons of Glenfield.
