Big second half propels Hornets past Mavericks

Harvey-Wells County came out of the locker room with renewed energy, outscoring Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood 35-21 in the second half and claiming a 63-51 victory over the Mavericks in Mohall on Tuesday, January 3.

The first quarter was a three-point shooting extravaganza on both sides, as Riley Morlock and Kellan Henry connected on two each for MLS and Brock Fike drained three for HWC. Morlock's second trey gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the night at 17-9, but back-to-back threes from Fike cut the lead to two.

Carson Nett hit a three for MLS and Henry's second trey moved the lead back to five at 23-15. Fike added his third long range shot of the quarter to end the first with the Hornets trailing by five.

Morlock's third three of the first half gave MLS a 27-20 lead, but the Hornets cut into the lead at halftime with a three from Noah Ziegler and Fike's fourth three to cut the lead to 30-28 at the break.

HWC opened the second half with a quick seven point lead with Tate Grossman leading the way with the first four. Morlock and Henry continued their hot shooting from the outside as the juniors pulled MLS into a 40 four tie with two more three pointers. A three from Teagan Tipton and a follow up from Grossman gave HWC a 49-44 lead after three.

The Hornets slowly pulled away in the fourth as Tallen Thorson, Gabe Allmaras and Fike contributed in an 8-0 run, moving the lead to double digits with 3:48 to play.

Eighth grader Eli Undlin tried to start a late rally for MLS with a long three, but the bucket was quickly answered by four straight from Grossman, moving the Hornets to a 63-51 victory.

Grossman led the Hornets in scoring on the night with 20 points, including 12 in the second half. Fike added 14 and Allmaras chipped in with 13 as HWC improved to 4-2 on the season.

Riley Morlock was the game's high scorer with 21, and was followed closely by Kellan Henry with 16. MLS dropped to 1-3 overall.

HWC committed just 11 turnovers and were 6-of-11 from the line. The Mavericks were 1-5 from the line with just seven turnovers on the night.
