4th-ranked Cougars breeze past Hornets

The Central McLean Cougars kept their unbeaten season alive and kept their top 10 ranking in Class B Girls intact with a convincing 65-33 win over Harvey-Wells County in Harvey on Saturday, January 7.

A quick look at the line score would sum up this game pretty well. The Cougars started with 27 first- quarter points, including four three-pointers, as they led by 17 after one. Taya Hornberger connected on a three-pointer, and Ashtyn Smith added two more and a two-and-one as Smith scored 10 and Adyln Eng added eight more in the quarter, helping Central McLean to the big lead.

Anna Skachenko, Morgan Snyder and Gracelyn Vaagene added more threes in the second quarter, as the Cougars built a 39-17 lead at the half. Breanna Heilman scored six in the first half for HWC.

The Hornets' best quarter of the night was the third, as four HWC players found the scoring column led by five from Emma Dockter. Dockter's three pointer started the third for HWC, but the Cougars answered with a 10-0 run, moving the lead to 49-20. Eng ended the third with six quarter points, and Central McLean led 55-27 after three.

Four Cougars scored in the fourth quarter and limited the Hornets to just a field goal and four free throws as they moved their record to 8-0 on the season with the 32-point win.

Central McLean was led in scoring by Smith and Eng with 16 points each. Daisy Sparrow was also in double digits with 12 for the Cougars.

HWC was led in scoring by Dockter and Heilman with eight each. The loss dropped HWC to 2-5 overall.
