#1 Honkers survive Cards' challenge

When the chance to prove yourself is given, you take it, and records can be thrown out the window.

Carrington had an open date on their schedule with the decision to withhold their varsity from facing Barnes County North earlier in the week, and instead elected to take on the number one team in the state at Bismarck State College Friday night, January 13.

The Kenmare/Bowbells Honkers needed a spurt to upend a Cardinal team still smarting from a 33-point loss to Central Cass the day before, and earned a tough 54-44 win over the Cards to stay unbeaten at the time at 12-0.

"Our girls played solid defense throughout the night to keep us in the game," said Head Coach Andy Braaten. "With that, our shooting was pretty subpar, so credit K-B's effort for that."

In the third quarter, and leading by just a 21-19 margin at the break, the Honkers went to work. An 11-0 run during that period proved decisive.

All-Stater Brenna Stroklund scored 18 points for Kenmare/Bowbells, followed by 11 from Madison Melin. Mashae Miller also added 10.

Senior Haley Wolsky's 14 points led the Cards (10-2), and Madison Johnson had nine points and three assists. Edyn Hoornaert cleaned up on the glass with nine rebounds, and Isabel Wendel had four steals and Wolsky three.

K-B's luck ran out the following night at the University of Jamestown, as the Kindred Viking girls ended the Honkers' undefeated string with a 62-52 loss.

The Cards had a measuring stick game this past Thursday night (January 19) in Oakes against the once-beaten Tornadoes, in what will likely decide top District 5 seeding.

This week, Carrington will have another tough district matchup Tuesday night in LaMoure, as they face the L-L-M Loboes.
