Archers take aim in Kensal

The 2023 archery season has begun, and Independent-area archers set their benchmarks at the Kensal bullseye tournament on Jan. 21.

Senior Gavyn Anderson led the Cardinal archers to a solid finish at the tournament. Anderson's score of 272 was fourth-highest among high school boys. Four other Cardinals also made the top 10 among high school boys: freshman Alex Braaten earned the same score as Anderson but had fewer tens, and thus finished fifth; Joe Lindberg claimed the #7 spot with a 266; Braden Kruse scored a 265 and finished in eighth place; while Kanin Zieman took ninth with a score of 260.

Sophomore Joslyne Thompson finished second in the high school girls division with a score of 272. Hailee Weber earned a third place medal with a score of 267. Ashley Lindberg and Brekka Kuss also finished in the top 10 among high school girls, in eighth and ninth place, respectively.

Gemma Inglish finished sixth place among middle school girls, with a score of 250. Kambry Linderman was ninth (245).

Blake Braaten cracked the top 10 in the middle school boys division with a 249.

Leading the elementary archers was Mason Cook with 241, seventh place among elementary boys.

A pair of middle schoolers led the host team, Midkota-Kensal. Jesse Wessels scored a 266 and finished third among the boys, and Harlie Hoyt was second among the middle school girls with a score of 258.

Paige Bl-ack and Ellie Hoffman finished fourth and fifth, respectively, among middle school girls. Black shot a 254 and Hoffman 251.

Junior Maya Wentz led the high school archers for Midkota, finishing seventh with a score of 254. Grace Johnson rounded out the top 10 high school girls with a score of 252.

Nolan Hoffman earned fourth among elementary boys with his 248. Cole Wessels wasn't far behind with a score of 237 and an eighth place finish in that division.

The elementary girls saw a strong showing from Kauri Johnson, who finished fifth with a 232. Logan Hoyt landed in the #6 slot in that division, scoring a 227. Other top 10 elementary girls for Midkota-Kensal included Avery Johnson in seventh (208) and Clara Lee in ninth (196).

Nearly 200 archers representing six N.D. schools competed in the tournament. Archery action is on tap every Saturday until mid-March. Area teams competed in both bullseye and 3D divisions at Carrington High School on Saturday, Jan. 28.

NR-S hosts its annual bullseye tournament the following Saturday, Feb. 4.
