Cards oust #5 Oakes, best Loboes in District 5 battles

Carrington's girls are just one win away from going unbeaten in their District 5 conference slate following two impressive victories this past week.

On January 19, the Cards played the third of their four consecutive top 10 Class B poll opponents, the fifth-rated Oakes Tornadoes, and passed that test with a 59-48 upset win in Tornado Alley.

A sustained defensive effort carried the day for CHS in the victory, and another balanced scoring sheet helped Coach Andy Braaten's ballclub get back into the win column following consecutive losses to Central Cass and Kenmare/Bowbells.

"It was a good district win on the road," Braaten said. "Our defense was consistent, but we need to do a better job on the boards, as Oakes got some key putbacks in the second quarter."

Sophomore forward Edyn Hoornaert posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, and also did a fine job of ball distribution with five assists, as did Madison Johnson.

Kacie Rexin also added 11 points, with a pair of threes among her output. Isabel Wendel kept the Tornado offense out of sync with six steals, and also made four assists and rebounds.

Underneath, Emma Hone had seven points and seven rebounds.

"The bench was a big factor," said Braaten. "Kacie, Olivia [Threadgold] and Kaydence [VanRay] continue to spark us."

The Tornadoes (9-2, 3-1 District 5) were led by 19 points from Laikyn Roney. Kassidy Jackson and Lily Thorpe both scored eight in defeat.

Carrington boarded the bus once again five nights later ahead to last Tuesday night, with LaMoure/Litchville-Marion the opponent.

In a game of runs, the Cards blitzed the Loboes in the second quarter with a 29-1 run, and cruised to a 59-34 victory in LaMoure.

Johnson went 8-for-20 from the field to lead all scorers with 21 points, and was money from the perimeter with five trifectas. She would tie with Wendel for the assist lead with four.

In another double-digit effort, Hoornaert scored 13, and led the Cards once again on the glass with eight boards while adding three steals.

Threadgold scored nine points, all on three-pointers, and also finished with four rebounds. Wendel hit the half-dozen mark once again for steals, getting six.

Tessa Rasmusson paced L-L-M (6-8, 3-2) with an 11-point evening, and scored the Loboes' only field goal in the second quarter rout. Norah DelaBarre added seven.

The Cards, 12-3 and 5-0 heading into last Friday's game with the E-K-M Rebels in the East Gym, have a chance to put away the only team that has its fate in its hands if they want to wrest the top District 5 seed away from the Cards.

Operating on the assumption that Oakes would win their final two district games to finish 5-1, CHS and the Rebels (11-3, 4-1 entering Friday's play) could force a three-way tie coming down to point differential if E-K-M were to get the victory in Carrington.

Because the Cards defeated Oakes by at least 10 points, their differential is maxed out at plus-10. E-K-M is at minus-6 (50-44 loss to the Tornadoes on January 3) and OHS would sit at minus-4 if they win their final league games to put the scenario in play.

If the Rebels were to defeat the Cards by at least eight points on January 27, they would get the top District 5 seed. Anything less, and CHS would win the regular-season crown.

Next up for Carrington is another top-10 Class B clash with the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks in Bismarck Saturday, February 4. The following Monday, the Cards' regular season finale is at home against HWC.
