Cards drop league L's to HCV, FW-M

It doesn't come often when an opponent comes to a road gym and his name is on all spectators' lips, down to the youngsters.

But that's the kind of presence 6'5" senior All-State forward Deng Deng brings to the floor every night for the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians.

The UND football commit scored about every way possible for the running-and-gunning Indians, including elevating an eye-popping two-handed slam dunk.

His talented FW-M teammates fed off that energy, riding their trademark pressing trap for 37 turnovers and hitting the triple-digit mark in a 100-34 rout over the Cardinals in the East Gym Tuesday night, February 13.

CHS's loss was their 11th consecutively, and they now sit at 1-17 for the season and 0-8 in Region 2 with their most recent results.

Dalen Leftbear scored 14 points and had two high-flying dunks of his own, and Ron McKay scored 10 points for the Indians, who bumped their record to 12-4 and 5-2 in Region 2.

Josh Bickett's 12 points led the Cards, and Taylen Mehring and Grady Shipman each finished with eight points.

On February 9, Carrington played the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros, and HCV had no issues in a 74-41 win over the visitors at the Hillsboro Event Center.

Two Burro players hit the 20-point mark in their win, with Landon Olson scoring 21 and Jacob Brandt 20. Carter Limke connected from three on a trio of trips down the floor, and finished with 11 points.

Bickett led with 18 for Carrington, while Shipman had eight. Neither team shot well from the line, with the Cards going 4-for-11 and HCV not much better at 9-for-20.

The next night, CHS would finally get in their nonregion game with the Rugby Panthers at Charlie Hanneman Gym on their third attempt, and gave the home squad all they could handle in a close-fought 65-60 defeat.

Carrington's biggest headache in the contest was Panther senior guard Rylan Hildenbrand, who scored 31 points (28 of those in the second half) and keyed a Rugby comeback from down four points at the start of the final quarter, 50-46.

Taytum Risovi had 12 points for the Panthers (7-12), while Tucker Volk had two big threes in the fourth and finished with 10.

Bickett had 23 for CHS, and Shipman added 18 in the loss.

The Cards close out their regular season schedule with two road games at Grafton Friday night, February 23, and Devils Lake one week from tonight (Monday) on February 26. Both games are Region 2 contests.
