Alone at the top: CHS earns #1 District 5 seed

In last week's Independent, a three-way tiebreaker scenario was explained, where the Carrington girls' basketball team could still earn a number one District 5 seed even with a narrow loss to E-K-M, and if Oakes were to win their final two games.

Turns out, the Cards were in no mood to do the math.

With a 49-41 win over the Rebels, Carrington rendered that point moot, finishing with a perfect six wins in six outings in district play and earning a first-round bye in next week's tournament in Jamestown.

"Our defensive effort was pretty consistent throughout the night," said Head Coach Andy Braaten. "It was another good district win for us."

E-K-M put the pressure on early with a two-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 12-10, and took a 26-21 lead at the half. In that second quarter for the Rebs, Mataeya Mathern got inside for a few nice looks, as did Norah Entzi.

Carrington answered out of the break with an 8-0 run, and their 16-5 output in the third quarter featured four three-pointers.

Two of those came from Madison Johnson, and Kacie Rexin and Olivia Threadgold had the other bombs to help the Cards pressure E-K-M to respond.

"Kacie and Olivia sparked us pretty well in that third quarter," said the coach.

Braaten gave special mention to the defense of Haley Wolsky on her assignment guarding the Rebel interior players.

"She did a good job, but going forward, we'll have to have a bit better effort as a team defending the dribble drive," he said.

Rexin had one of her stronger efforts, going for 14 points to lead CHS. Edyn Hoornaert led the Cards in the statistical categories with five rebounds, five assists and two steals, while scoring 10 points of her own.

Johnson had eight points, and Isabel Wendel had another good floor game with four rebounds and four assists.

For the Rebels (11-4, 3-2 District 5), Mathern had 11 points and Entzi finished with 10 more. Kiara Jangula had seven in defeat.

Carrington plays their regular season finale tonight (February 6) in Fessenden opposite the HWC Hornets, and will be off for the first day of play at the District 5 Tourney at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Cards will play the winner of Friday's game between fourth-seeded LaMoure/Litchville-Marion and fifth-seeded Ellendale on Saturday, February 11, at 6 p.m.
