Grossman's big nights propel HWC to three wins

Tate Grossman scored 86 points in three Hornet victories this past week, as HWC moved to 9-4 on the season.

Two of the wins were regional wins, including a huge win over a very good North Star Bearcat team in Fessenden. HWC also picked up a regional victory over Lakota and a non-regional victory over Kidder County.

HWC 71, North Star 65

HWC scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter, and turned a two-point deficit after three quarters into a 71-65 regional victory in Fessenden on Friday, January 27.

The Hornets got out to a fast start, taking an 8-2 lead on three pointers from Grossman and Brock Fike. The Bearcats used an 11-0 run down the first quarter stretch with four players scoring. Owen Kurtti finished the run off with a three-pointer, helping North Star to an 18-17 lead after one.

The second quarter was a fast-paced, high-scoring quarter, with 43 points being scored. Grossman scored 10 for HWC, but Dane Hagler scored 11 for the Bearcats as the lead changed several times. North Star took a 36-32 lead late in the quarter, but five in a row from Grossman gave HWC the lead back. Parker Simon's three-pointer at the buzzer gave the visitors a 41-37 lead at halftime.

The Hornets used a 10-0 run midway through the third, with Grossman scoring six and Tallen Thorson and Keaton Keller adding a field goal each, as the Hornets moved ahead, 51-46. North Star responded quickly, scoring the final eight points of the third with Dane Hagler getting an offensive putback and a three-pointer to help the Bearcats retake the lead, 53-51, after three.

The Hornets came out of the quarter break on fire, getting three pointers from Fike, Gabe Allmaras and Grossman, as they scored the first 13 points of the fourth and took a 64-53 lead.

With 3:22 remaining, the Bearcats scored their first points of the fourth, but the Hornets responded nicely, playing some solid defense and limiting North Star to any late quarter comeback attempt.

Grossman led all players on the night, as the senior was outstanding on both ends of the floor, scoring 29 points. Allmaras was also in double digits with 16 points, including 11 in the first half. The Bearcats were led by Dane Hagler's 28 points. Hagler was joined in double digits by Parker Simon with 10.

With the win, HWC moves to 7-4 on the season and 2-1 in Region 4 while North Star drops to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in regional play.

HWC 71, Kidder Co. 45

When one team scores the first 23 points of the game, it makes it difficult to stage a comeback.

HWC did just that, as they opened on a 23-0, run but the Wolves of Kidder County did not give up as they played the rest of the game within four points of the Hornets in an HWC 71-45 victory in Steele on Saturday, January 28.

Grossman scored 10, Fike and Allmaras knocked down threes, and Keaton Keller tallied four more points as the Hornets opened with an impressive run. Simon Hager's three-pointer put an end to the streak, and Grossman tallied the final deuce as HWC led, 25-3, after one.

Dylan Schadegg and Jace Larson connected on threes for Kidder County in the second, and five Hornet players contributed 12 points as the Hornets, despite 10 first half turnovers, led, 37-15, at the half.

Grossman and Keller tallied six each for HWC in the third, as they built a 50-22 lead. Hager scored five late in the quarter for the Wolves to pull Kidder County to within 50-29, but HWC led, 52-29, after three.

Collin Zimmerman scored 10 points for the Wolves in the fourth, and with a field goal from Thomas Moch, Kidder County cut the lead to 17. The Hornets would score the final 10 points of the game for the 26-point victory.

Grossman led all players on the night with 23 points and was joined in double digits by Keller with 15 and Allmaras with 12. Allmaras yanked down 16 rebounds, while Grossman and Keller each grabbed 10.

Hager led a list of three Wolves players in doubles with 12 points. Larson and Zimmerman tallied 11 and 10, respectively.

The win moved HWC to 8-4 overall while Kidder County dropped to 2-12 on the season.

HWC 74, Lakota 56

Grossman scored 12 points in the first quarter, and added 15 more in the fourth quarter, as the senior put the Hornets on his back and helped HWC hold off a stingy Lakota Raider team in a 74-56 win in Lakota on Monday, January 30.

Considering that Grossman scored the first 10 points for HWC, the game had a slow start. The Hornets led, 10-8, before a strong finish highlighted by two three-pointers from Fike gave the Hornets a 18-8 lead after one.

HWC maintained a healthy advantage into the second, as they led 27-13 at the halfway point. Jackson Baumgarn scored six as the Raiders closed the gap to 31-23, but a 7-2 run by HWC to end the half moved the score to 38-25.

Allmaras and Fike hit three pointers for HWC early in the third quarter, but the Raiders would answer at every opportunity. Zach Gibson connected on two treys, and Baumgarn scored six points as Lakota outscored HWC, 19-15, and pulled to within 53-44 after three quarters.

Thorson's three pointer started a 6-0 run to start the fourth, moving the HWC lead to 15. The Hornets relied on Grossman in the fourth to stamp out any chance of a Raider comeback.

The standout senior scored at will in the quarter, including seven straight points midway through, giving HWC a 22-point lead. Gibson and Baumgarn connected on threes for Lakota down the stretch to pull the home team within 18 points when the final horn blew.

Leading the way for the victors was Grossman with 34 points. Also in double digits for HWC were Thorson with 12 and Fike with 11. Allmaras led the cleanup crew wiping the boards for 13 rebounds.

The Raiders were paced by 18 from Gibson and 17 from Baumgarn. The Hornet defense forced Lakota into 18 turnovers on the night.

With the win, HWC moves to 9-4 overall and 3-1 in Super Region 4, while Lakota falls to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the region.
