Out of the doldrums: Griggs/Midkota gets first win

Sometimes, that first taste of success can be contagious.

The Griggs/Midkota Titan girls, in the midst of an 0-14 start to the season, had some close calls along the way, but the dam finally burst in their favor in a big way Monday night, January 30.

G-M rolled over a completely outmatched Barnes County North team with 20-point quarters in each period of play, and got their first victory of the winter, 88-11.

Kaylee Johnson camped inside for much of the contest, and put down numerous point-blank baskets to finish with a career-high 20 points. Another senior, Lauryn Halvorson, had 13 points, and Vanessa Vollmer added 11.

Thirteen of the 14 players who saw action for the Titans got into the scorebook.

To illustrate the BCN program's predicament, the Bison girls do not have the numbers in the middle grades to field a junior varsity program, and are forced to dress six seventh graders and three freshmen for varsity games. One of their seniors is out with an injury, meaning they have just two upperclassmen players on the roster.

Carlee Barnes' four points led BCN (0-5, 0-15). Keyli Beyer and Jayden Samek each had three points.

G-M was scheduled to play Maple River on January 26, but the game was cancelled due to weather. Due to the season winding down, and it being a nondistrict contest, it is not expected to be made up.

Tuesday night, the Titans faced E-K-M in Kulm, and took a 75-24 loss to finish at 1-5 in District 5 play. Scoring summary from that game was unavailable at press time.

G-M will be the number six seed in the upcoming district tournament in Jamestown, taking on the third-seeded Rebels in Friday, February 10's opening round at the Civic Center.
