On occasion, the significance of the moment finds the unlikeliest of heroes.
In the inaugural East Region Girls' Dual Wrestling Tournament, competitors from first-year program Carrington got a crash course in the emotions and sense of accomplishment that a well-fought match can bring out.
CHS's Ashley Lindberg lived that euphoria following three minutes and 36 seconds of tension on the mat.
With her team trailing the Fargo Stingers in the opening round, 40-36, Lindberg put on the headgear and velcro leg band to face imposing foe Emma Osier in the 250-pound match.
Needing a pin for the team victory, the shy freshman made the right moves, turned Osier on her back, and delivered a thunderous celebration for she and her Cardinal teammates that shook the East Gym to its core.
But it wasn't just the final match that led up to that.
Clutch pins from Kenzie Jost at 100 pounds, along with five other falls along the way, helped the Cards advance past the big-city grappling squad.
In the semifinals, CHS used their numbers advantage in the middle to upper weights to get past the South Border Mustangs, 51-30.
In that match, Taya Lura began the dual with a pin at 105, followed by six points each with falls by Kylie Skadberg (115), Mercedes Lura (120), Kennedy Wendel (135), Trisa Schroeder (155) and Karlee Lesmann (170).
The state champions from the first year of sanctioned girls' wrestling, Central Cass, met the Cards in the finals. The Squirrels' lineup depth and experience won out in a 54-27 defeat.
Girls getting wins in the finals on the mat included Wendel, Khendra Garcia (140) and Schroeder.
With Classes A and B combined into just two regions, the top four teams all earned advancement to the state girls' duals.
The Squirrels and Cardinals, along with Fargo and the Grand Forks Knightriders (Central/Red River), will represent the East Region Saturday, February 18.
CHS' first round dual will be against West third seed Bismarck High. Other duals in the opening round pit Central Cass versus Bismarck Century, West top seed Minot opposite Grand Forks, and Bismarck Legacy taking on Fargo.
The winner of Carrington/BHS will face the Minot/Grand Forks winner in the semifinal round, as will winners of the CC/Century and Legacy/Fargo matches.
