Titans lose close one to Raiders; roll young H-N team at GCCHS

Griggs/Midkota fell in a closely-contested matchup with the Lakota Raiders, then got back on the winning track with a big victory over Hatton-Northwood in last week's play.

The Raiders made use of big games from Jaxon Baumgarn and Zach Gibson, and hit 16 of their 19 foul shots to make the difference in a 57-54 win over the Titans in Glenfield on February 9.

Baumgarn hit for 25 points and Gibson 18 more to improve Lakota's season mark to 8-8 for the year.

Latrell Rainey finished with 15 points to pace Griggs/Midkota. Eli Larson also had 12 points and Wyatt Spickler chipped in for 10 more.

The script changed significantly five nights later in Cooperstown, as a Thunder program missing a good portion of their team to drug-related suspensions came to town last Tuesday evening.

Now an underclassman-dominated squad, Hatton-Northwood struggled to stick with the Titans, and G-M took their sixth win of the season, 75-18.

Only four players scored for the Thunder (2-17), two eighth graders, a freshman and a sophomore. Aiden Johnson paced H-N's efforts with seven points, followed by Leonel Borjon with six.

Spickler had a game-high 17 points, while Carter Spitzer had 13, Larson another dozen and Kyle Johnson finished with 11 points.

The final two games for the Titans were this past Friday and Saturday, when they faced Langdon/Edmore/Munich and Larimore.

Griggs/Midkota (6-11 pending their final two regular season games) will be the number six seed in the District 5 Tournament, and are slated to take on E-K-M in the first round of play in Jamestown Friday.

Other first round games feature Carrington taking on Oakes, and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion against Barnes County North.

Ellendale is the top seed, and received a first-round bye. The Cardinals took their first loss of the season on the court to Central Cass, 69-32, on February 11, and had another loss on their record added with a December 31 forfeit to Enderlin.
