Carrington wins Region 3 qualifier

Carrington will be playing in the Region 3 Tournament today (March 6) after defeating the Barnes County North Bison, 77-54, in the qualifying game Tuesday afternoon, February 28, at the District 5 Tournament from the Jamestown Civic Center.

In the process, the Cards had to overcome a 15-point deficit as late as the second quarter, and trailed by a 32-27 count at halftime.

Senior forward Hudson Schmitz achieved the personal milestone of 1,000 career points with a basket in the fourth quarter, and led CHS with 28 points in the contest. Jack Erickson scored 18, Grady Shipman 15 and Josh Bickett added 10.

Oliver Hanson's 18 points were a team high for BCN (8-13), who also got a 13-point effort from Jonah Harstad and 12 more by Will Schwehr.

A full boxscore from the qualifier will be published in next week's Independent.

The Cards' record bumped up to 13-9 with the win, and is the number four seed from the district. They will play the District 6 champion, either M-P-B or South Border, in the first round, with the tournament winner advancing to the State Class B Tournament in Bismarck.

The identity of CHS' first round Region 3 opponent was not known until after the Independent's publishing deadline, due to the game being played last Thursday evening.

All-District 5 Team members for Carrington, announced after the game, were Schmitz and Erickson, and CHS Coach Tim Ranum was named the District 5 Coach of the Year.

(Editor's Note: The print version of this story had the M-P-B/South Border championship being played last Wednesday, but another postponement moved in back to the following day.)
