Trending upward: CHS girls win region title; boys finish third

Carrington had a very successful and lucrative day on the track in west-central North Dakota, taking the girls' championship and finishing third in the boys' race at the South Central Region Track Meet in Hazen Friday, May 19.

The Cardinal girls easily outdistanced runner-up Central McLean, 161 points to the Cougars' 104.5. Shiloh Christian was just behind in third with 104.

Carrington was also firmly in contention for the boys' crown as well, scoring 98 points. Shiloh was the meet winner with 114.33, and host Hazen second at 108.5.

In regional meets, point scoring is often secondary to the goal of gaining additional state qualification slots. Any competitor placing in the top three in any event earns automatic berths to the state meet in Bismarck, regardless if they achieve provisional distances and times or not.

New qualifiers for the girls included Isabel Wendel gaining two berths in the 100 and 300-meter hurdle races, along with Mercedes Lura in the 200-meter dash, Edyn Hoornaert in the 800, Kenadie Pazdernik in the 3,200, Jazmyn Ybarra in pole vault and Kacie Rexin in javelin.

The Cards also added four additional runner slots in three relays. Sierra Friedt joins the 4x200 roster, as well as Harper Kollman doing the same in the 4x400 and Baylee Lura and Rexin for the 4x800 race.

Switching to the boys, junior Logan Weninger broke the 24-year-old CHS school record in the 400-meter dash, becoming the first Cardinal to run under 50 seconds in the event, hitting the line in 49.93. Weninger's time is currently the top seed in Class B, and surpassed Dan Keys' 1999 mark of 50.7 seconds.

One new qualifier for CHS on that side was an additional relay competitor. Peyton Harrington was the only new state entrant in Hazen, qualifying in the 4x400-meter relay.

Fourteen girls and eight boys have earned state slots for the Cards in Bismarck. The full CHS contingent of qualifiers, and their events, are as follows:
