Hornet net squad sweeps Raiders

Harvey-Wells County put together strong finishes in all three high school volleyball games against Drake-Anamoose to seal a 3-0 sweep over the Lady Raiders on Thursday, August 31, in Drake.

The Hornets and Lady Raiders were close at the beginning of all three games, but the Hornets finished each game with a strong run. Game one saw Mariah Mack with consecutive kills, pulling Drake-Anamoose to within 7-6. Ashley Keller's second kill of the night gave HWC a mini-run and a 10-6 lead.

An ace from Bella Boucher pulled the visitors to within 11-9 before the Hornets put some separation between the two teams. Leading 18-13, Rachel Neumiller served the final seven points and was the benefactor of three kills from Ashley Keller, one from Rylee Jones and her own ace, as the Hornets won game one, 25-13.

A kill from Evelyn Isaak and a few mental mistakes from HWC kept Drake-Anamoose close early on in game two. Another Mack kill tied the score at eight. An ace and kill from Neumiller and two kills from Jones helped secure a 6-0 run midway through for a 14-8 HWC lead. Braylee Keller added three more kills, as HWC took a 20-11 lead. Jones helped finish game two off with consecutive aces, while Neumiller ended the game with a kill and 25-15 win.

The Lady Raiders started strong in game three with a quick 4-1 lead. Neumiller had three consecutive kills as the Hornets tied the set. With the game knotted at seven, Mack hammered down two kills, helping Drake-Anamoose to an 11-7 advantage. Kali Fike and Braylee Keller added kills midway through, but the Lady Raiders maintained a 14-11 lead.

With the game tied at 16, HWC scored four straight on kills from Brooklyn Dockter and two from Neumiller for a 20-16 HWC lead. Another Mack kill was all Drake-Anamoose could muster in the final points, as a net ball ended game three with the Hornets on top, 25-20.

Leading the team statistically was Neumiller, who had 13 kills, 10 digs and seven aces. Jones had nine kills and three aces, while Ashley Keller had eight kills and three aces.
