Cards fall to 0-4 with loss to Burros

A team with a lot of length, shooting ability and postseason success from their legendary tenure in Class B came to the East Gym in search of a win in the tough Region 2 gauntlet.

And, at the end of the night, the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros came away with their first Division A win in three tries, doubling up the Carrington Cardinals by a final count of 64-32 Thursday night, December 21.

The Burros (1-2, 1-0 region) and two time state championship-winning coach Elliot Rotvold brought their fundamentally-sound brand of basketball out west, and immediately got going against the winless Cards.

In the first quarter, HCV went to their height, feeding 6'9" senior forward/center Jacob Brandt for seven points, which also had a three-pointer in the mix. Carter Limke also had seven in the period, and the Burros ended the quarter with a 10-point lead, 21-11.

CHS did their best to keep up the tempo, as Grady Shipman hit threes on his first few trips down the court and Jake Otto also found the bottom of the net with a trey.

After two quarters of action, the Burros increased their margin to 34-19, and were well on their way to getting in the win column.

Still, HCV came roaring out of the halftime festivities, and senior forward Landon Olson got his inside groove going.

After scoring 10 in the first half, Olson went off for 12 in the third quarter alone, and would finish off with a game-high 23 for the Burros.

Double-figure scorers for the visitors also included Limke with 12 and Brandt chipping in for 11.

Junior Josh Bickett led Carrington (0-4, 0-2 region) with 14 points, and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Otto scored six, as did Shipman.

One positive sign for the Cards was the play of 6'5" freshman center Drew Matt, who scored two second quarter baskets for four points while dealing with the challenges of the HCV interior defense.

This Thursday, CHS is hopeful that their rivalry game with NR-S can help spark some spirit, and possibly turn their early season struggles around. The game with the Rockets will be in the East Gym, with games beginning at 3:30 p.m.
