Defense leads CHS girls to rout of Rugby

Out in Rugby, the Carrington Cardinal girls basketball team brought out their hard hats and lunch pails, and did some work on defense.

The Cards held the Panthers to a paltry 20 points in a 30-point victory in Division A basketball, 50-20, in the final game before the Christmas break Thursday night, December 21.

Junior Edyn Hoornaert carried the offensive load all night long for CHS (4-3), scoring 10 first half points and 11 more in the second to finish with 21. Kenadie Pazdernik had six points to pace the remainder of the balanced Cardinal lineup, hitting two three-pointers.

Coach Andy Braaten's club got a third of their field goals via the trey, hitting seven on the evening. Along with Pazdernik, Hoornaert, Kacie Rexin, Brynn Smith, Olivia Threadgold and Isabel Wendel all made long distance connections.

"The girls played a pretty consistent game on both sides," Braaten said. "Defensively we brought some good intensity and five turnovers is a focused ball handling effort we need to continue."

For the Panthers (3-3), Elise Fahnestock was the leader with five points. Rugby took their third straight defeat, following losses to Hazen and Devils Lake, after winning the CNDC Tournament earlier this month.

In the junior varsity game, the younger CHS girls improved to 3-4 on the season with a 46-39 win, and the C-squad played and lost a 24-21 three-quarter game in their first official action of the winter.

On the other side of the new year, the Cards are back in action, hitting the bus for Valley City on Tuesday to take on the Hi-Liners. They come back to Region 2 play on January 9, when they play host to Four Winds/Minnewaukan.
