Max Ciubotareanu had wins in all three of his dual matches at 172 pounds for the Cards.
The Carrington boys wrestling team, save for their efforts with the championship opponent, had a very strong performance at the Region 2 Dual Tournament in Larimore Saturday, February 3.
CHS finished as the runners-up at the tournament to meet winner Northern Lights, competing in Region 2 for the first time following realignment prior to this season.
In round one, the Cards took a 42-8 win over the host Polar Bears. Coach Josh Kerbaugh's team dropped just two matches in the dual, which had four double forfeits.
The semifinal round pitted the grapplers with the Hillsboro/Central Valley Burros, and once again, the Cards rolled by a 54-13 score. HCV prevailed in only two matches via decision and major decision, and picked up a forfeit at 139 pounds.
Top seed Northern Lights awaited in the championship, the only team to defeat CHS within the region this season. The co-op, which contains wrestlers from the Rolla, St. John and Rolette school districts, displayed their talent up and down the lineup in taking a 45-21 win over the Cards for the plaque.
Getting wins against Northern Lights were Gabe Clifton (133 pounds, pin), Corbin Clifton (145, pin), Max Ciubotareanu (172, 2-1 decision), Brody Weisenburger (285, 6-2) and Dru Carr went the full three overtime periods at 114 pounds to get a 5-4 win by ultimate tiebreaker.
Pembina County North, meanwhile, wrestled their way to the third place trophy with a 42-33 win over May-Port-CG. Since the Cards hadn't wrestled the Grizzlies previously in the dual, that set up a challenge situation where CHS and PCN would go for the State B berth.
And the Cards were up to the task, earning the last Region 2 spot with a 51-21 win.
Starting at 133 pounds, Carrington got out to an insurmountable 24-0 lead after four weight classes through pins from the Clifton brothers, Nic Garber (139) and Vinnie Ruppell (152).
Weisenburger would put the dual out of reach for PCN with a pin at 285, making the score 39-9 going into the crossover back to 107 and the four matches remaining.
Other victories in the dual came from Ciubotareanu, Callen Garber (189), Skye Kramlich (107) and Carr.
State Dual pairings
The random draw for the State B Dual Tournament was early this past week, and Carrington didn't get any favors with their first round opponent.
Top-seeded Velva will be their initial foe starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 17. The Aggies defeated Carrington earlier this year, 49-12, and dealt Lisbon (#2 seed) a defeat at CHS' triangular tournament on December 19.
Additional first round pairings include the Broncos taking on Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central, #3 South Border against New Salem/Almont, and the #4/#5 matchup features Northern Lights and Killdeer.
