Ellendale gets payback for region title defeat

Obviously, it's little consolation now, but the Ellendale Cardinals exacted a small measure of vengeance on the Medina/Pingree-Buchanan Thunder for their epic 57-56 Region 3 championship defeat last March.

Now District 2 rivals, Ellendale got out to a sizable lead before M-P-B closed in on the Cardinals in the fourth quarter, but the host team got past the Thunder, 53-49, on Friday, February 2.

Six-foot-eight junior forward Kade Schimke had 16 points for Ellendale (11-5, 6-2 District 2). Supporting performances came from Mason Molan with 15 points, including three shots behind the arc, and Jack Bommersbach ended the night with 12 for the Cardinals.

Two players who were reserves last season for M-P-B ended up carrying the offense. Chase Ova drilled five trifectas en route to 17 points, while Terek Kinzell finished with 14. Rylen Wick, hobbled by injury for much of this season, was held to seven.

Another State B berth contender came to Pingree on Tuesday, as the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels and their 11-3 record faced the Thunder in another battle within the district table.

In that matchup, the Rebs blew past the Thunder by a final score of 70-47.

E-K-M was led by Zeke Barnick's 19 points, and Jacob Nitschke and Brogen Young had 11. Wick led the Thunder with 19 points in defeat.

M-P-B's record now sits at 9-7 overall, and 3-4 in District 2 competition. They conclude the regular season this week with a Tuesday night game against District 1 opponent Oakes, before playing out the string Thursday night against Carrington in the East Gym.

The District 2 Tournament will be held starting February 23 at the Jamestown Civic Center. The Region 1 Tournament will also be at the JCC, held March 4, 5 and 7.
