A humbling end

Devils Lake finishes off Cardinal boys season in 58-point loss, 100-42

Every time the Devils Lake Firebirds took the ball down the floor, it seemed like they'd convert on their possessions in 10 seconds or less.

And the Carrington Cardinals were largely powerless to stop it, meaning their season came to a painful conclusion at the Region 2 Tournament at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse at Mayville State University Monday night, March 4.

The Firebirds shot a blistering 25-for-35 in the first half for 71 percent, and kept the pressure on into the third quarter to hit the 100-point mark and put an emphatic stomp on the Cardinal boys basketball campaign, 100-42.

Sitting at 19-2 for the season, the Firebirds were quite possibly the most lethal third seed possible in a region where there is virtually no separation talent-wise between them, top seed Grafton and second seed Four Winds-Minnewaukan.

From the opening tip, Devils Lake dominated play with their speed, size, length and shooting advantages, not to mention their staggering depth.

Like the other two times the teams played, the Firebirds went deep into their bench and saw practically no drop off in offensive ability. No Firebird player played more than 13 1/2 minutes of floor time in their blowout win.

Wylee Delorme went 7-for-11 from the field for 16 points for Devils Lake. Max Palmer hit three of his four three-point shots en route to 15 points, and three other players, Parker Brodina, Drew Hofstad and Mason Palmer, had double figures in the scoring column.

Senior Grady Shipman stepped off the floor for the last time as a Cardinal with a workmanlike 11-point, three-rebound and three-assist effort, and junior Josh Bickett hit for 10 points, including a pair of threes. Taylen Mehring, a freshman, finished with two three-balls and eight points.

The Firebirds enjoyed a 39-20 rebounding edge, spread out between 12 different players. They forced 10 steals, and had three blocked shots.

Where the points accumulated was from beyond the arc. DLHS singed the nets for 14 three-pointers in the game from nine players, several of which came when the game was well in hand.

With the win, the Firebirds advanced to play FW-M (17-4) in the second semifinal game last Tuesday night. First round winner Thompson (12-10 following a 76-60 win over Hillsboro/Central Valley) took on Grafton (18-3) in the first semi.

All four teams remain alive for a state tournament berth at least until this past Thursday, when the third place winner and championship game participants are known.

The Region 2 title winner will advance automatically to the State Division A Boys Basketball Tournament in Fargo March 14-16.

Whoever wins third place, along with the Region 2 runner-up, will play in the eastern state qualifying round Saturday, March 9, at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex (SHAC) in Fargo.

For Carrington, the season came to an end with a 2-21 record, and the sometimes-humbling experience of the past season in Division A has served notice to the Cards that work will need to be done in the offseason if they are to start trending upward in the Region 2 pecking order.

Shipman, along with Aaron Neumiller, Jake Otto and Owen Hagel, are the graduating seniors from this year's CHS team.

Their hard work, positive attitude and leadership will serve well in showing present and future Cardinal players how to play with humility and class even when everything appears to be a lost cause.
