CHS girls season BB leaders released

The final statistics for the Carrington girls basketball team for the 2023-24 season have been revealed.

This year's iteration of the Cardinals finished with a 17-8 record in their first season in the new Division A, finishing third place in both the Region 2 regular season and tournament, and advancing to the state qualifying game. There, they fell to Region 1 runner-up Valley City, 62-56.

Senior Madison Johnson was the top scorer at 11.2 points per game, followed by junior Edyn Hoornaert (10.7) and senior Kacie Rexin (10.5).

Johnson was also the rebounding leader with an even 6.0 boards per game. Hoornaert, along with junior Isabel Wendel, were in a statistical dead heat for second place at 5.6.

In the assist statistic, Wendel was the top distributor with 4.2 per contest, followed by Johnson at 2.4 and Hoornaert at 1.9.

For steals, Johnson won her third category at 2.8 per game, trailed closely by Wendel (2.6) and Rexin (2.1).

One stat where the Cards did not register much success was blocks, as they had just nine total in 25 games. Wendel had five of those, Johnson three and Hoornaert accounted for the other one.

Judging on a minimum of 91 shot attempts, Hoornaert, along with senior Olivia Threadgold, were the top field goal shooters at 49% from the floor (86-for-175 for Hoornaert and 56-for-113 for Threadgold). Johnson and Rexin both shot 40%, and Wendel's rate was 38%.

The identity this year's Cards forged was one whose success largely rode on perimeter shooting.

Four different players had more than 100 attempts from beyond the arc, and Rexin was the top marksman at 36% (46-for-127). Johnson hit 35 treys for 28%, Hoornaert and Threadgold 28 and 24, respectively, both for 23%, and sixth girl off the bench Kenadie Pazdernik, a junior, hit 18 trifectas at a 30% clip.

From the foul line, the Cards were 68% as a team, and with 24 minimum attempts, junior Kaydence VanRay had the top percentage of 75% (18-for-24). Johnson was just behind at 74%, but was by far the highest-volume free throw shooter at 100-for-134. Rexin and Threadgold were at 73%, and Wendel 61%.

In a smaller sample size, Pazdernik was almost automatic, going a sparking 10-for-11 for 90% total.
