From the Past: Wenaas new Legion commander

June 2, 1949

Dr. C. P. Lura, president of Mayville State Teachers College, delivered the address at graduation services here last Thursday evening. His topic was “The Future is Your Problem.”

The top-ranking students receiving honors were Betty Fornshell, valedictorian, and Anna Lofstedt, salutatorian. Other honor students were Leonard Albus, Ross Bestgen, Calvin Greatsinger, James Hogan, Bonita Pedersen, Kent Simonson, Irene Steinman and Eileen Zink.

Duane Clapp, reseller salesman has been presented with the “Safe Driving Recognition Award” by the Standard Oil Company in recognition of the fact that no accidents are chargeable against his record as a driver for a period of 9 consecutive years. A Kensal man, J.W. McGuire, has received a similar award for 11 years of driving without an accident.

Carrington lost a Tri-County league game to New Rockford there Sunday, coming out on the short end of a 6 to 3 score. Oscar Dell was the starting pitcher for Carrington and was relieved by Bud Semmens.

Rains of varying intensity on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week brought to this area much needed moisture, and prospects for a good crop

are brighter than they have been for weeks.

Luverne Graham, Harold Tucker and Sam Zimmerman from Carrington have already registered for Boys State. The sponsoring agencies are American Legion, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. Jerry Arendt will represent Sykeston at Boys State.

Steve Wenaas was chosen commander of the American Legion post of Carrington. Other officers include Lloyd Hanson, vice commander; Robert Parks, sergeant-at-arms: Howard Fisher, chaplain: William Welsh, executive committeeman at large; James Felchle, historian’ P.J. Goss, finance officer; and Walter F. Caverly, service officer.

May 29, 1974

Carrington Boy Scout Troop 172 was the winner of the Camporee Traveling trophy for the best-kept campsite at spring camp near Jamestown May 7 - 19. The local scouts were among 210 boys from 14 troops at the Camporee.

A new medical and dental clinic building has been proposed for Carrington by a group of citizens. The proposal, as it is currently being discussed, calls for construction of a structure which would be large enough to house the offices of three medical doctors and two dentists. A site for the new clinic has also been tentatively designated - a 350 x 500 lot in the vicinity of Golden Acres Manor.

Marlys Eldsvoog and Paula Engstrom, Carrington, and Roxy Hornbacher of Cathay were among candidates for degrees awarded by Minot State College.

Arlene Goter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Goter, Carrington, has been selected by the Indiana University School of Music Alumni Association as the outstanding senior

of the 1973-74 year in the school of music.

Arlys J. Paulson, Carrington, was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science in nursing at the 100th annual commencement of Valparaiso University on Sunday, May 19.

Terra Kay Gauderman will represent Grace City at Girls State at Grand Forks. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Gauderman.

Aarestad’s Museum in McHenry may be the county’s best kept secret. The residents of McHenry insist it isn’t a secret, they have known about it since John Aarestad, Sr., began his collection of vintage cars to hunting trophies to McHenry memorabilia and more. A 1920 Buick Roadster that was owned by Aarestad will be restored in time to drive in the Centennial parade on June 19.

Charles Mehring, Carrington, was fishing at Black Tiger Bay near Devils Lake when he caught a 21 pound Tiger Muskie. He was fishing from shore. The catch was officially weighed and measured to enter the North Dakota Whopper Club.

Midkota School sends three boys to N.D. Boys State. They are John Simenson, Brett Christiansen and David Spickler.

Carrington’s Ryan Carr rolled a game of 237, 204 and 213 for a scratch score of 654 to win the North Dakota State YABA Junior Bowling tournament. He is the son of Tom and Mary Carr, Carrington.

Engagements - Julie Miller and Joseph Martinson, announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. A June 19 wedding is planned.

Shaunette Dunn and Michael Koenig announce their engagement. A July 24 wedding will take place in Carrington.

Obituaries - Lydin “Pat” McCreary, 85, Carrington, died May 20; funeral services for Brent L. Anderson, 63, Courtenay, was held May 26; Lloyd Westby, 79, Sheyenne, died May 19;

Louise Brandt, 84, Sheyenne, died May 19.

Farm Credit Services of North Dakota has promoted Renee St. Croix to a Loan Officer. Renee is a Kenmare native and a graduate of NDSU.

Area News - The community of Glenfield held a retirement party for Donna Halvorson Sat., May 22. Donna retired from the postal service a few months ago.

Darold and Evelyn Anderson were in Fargo Saturday afternoon to attend the 50th wedding anniversary celebration for Don and Elaine Dahl.

Ann Harding and Claire Somerville sold poppies for American
