    Erik Gjovik|Jan 9, 2023

As Minnesota schools were dominating the boys' varsity and JV divisions at the Rumble on the Red in Fargo, the home state girls were representing quite well in their portion of the mega-tournament. Carrington's first-year girls program had two wrestlers make placement matches, and the team came in 14th place overall with 74 points. Junior Kylie S...

  • Working overtime: Thunder wins over Cards, 51-49

    Nathan Price|Jan 9, 2023

On Thursday, Dec. 29, the Carrington Cardinals traveled to Pingree to take on the Medina-Pingree/Buchanan Thunder in what was an intense basketball game from start to finish. Early on, it was clear that both teams would be playing with intensity as they fought to take down one of their rivals. For the Thunder, Thursday's game was their first of the 2022-23 season. The Cardinals, though, had already played three games before they arrived at Pingree, and had won all of them. Both teams were...

  • Titans beat Dakota Prairie, 55-35; now 2-3

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 9, 2023

The Griggs/Midkota Titans hoped to build on the momentum of their two-point win over NR-S 10 days earlier, and returned to the hardwood post-Christmas with a nonregion contest against Dakota Prairie on December 30. And a hot start for the Titan shooters helped them accomplish that aim, with a 55-35 win over the Knights in Binford thanks to double-digit scoring nights by Eli Larson and Brady Haugen. Larson scored a team-high 14 points, all on two-point field goals, and Haugen splashed in two...

  • Hornets sweep two-game swing

    Lane Moellenkamp|Jan 9, 2023

The holiday break for the HWC boys basketball team was short-lived, as the Hornets found themselves paired up with the Towner-Granville-Upham (TGU) Titans and the Parshall/North Shore-Plaza Braves. The Hornets also found a couple of wins and some needed playing time during the games, as they defeated the Titans by eight and the Braves by 19. HWC 54, TGU 46 The Hornets and Titans met on Friday, December 30 for a non-regional boys basketball matchup at Harvey High School. A 11-2 run late in the...

  • Cruise control: #7 Cards move to 9-0 with wins over G-M, M-P-B

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 9, 2023

Carrington's pressure defense forced 16 total steals, and converted time and time again in transition to earn a 74-16 win over Griggs/Midkota Friday night, December 30, at the East Gym. The first District 5 game for either side was a makeup game originally scheduled for December 15, but postponed due to weather. Haley Wolsky led all players with 22 points, with much of that coming off steals and quick baskets. Olivia Threadgold had 11 points and five rebounds, and Edyn Hoornaert finished with...

  • Timely run keeps CHS girls rolling, defeat L/E/M Cards

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 9, 2023

Only a few minutes into the third quarter of their mid-Christmas break matchup with Langdon/Edmore/Munich at the East Gym, Carrington found themselves staring up at a six-point deficit, 28-22. Nothing that a 19-0 outburst can't cure. The central Cards fired up the afterburners and zoomed past the far northern redbirds for an impressive 41-34 win over L/E/M to keep their flawless record of 7-0 intact. CHS' final score was deceptively close, as the visitor Cardinals got two three-pointers late....

  • North Dakota Outdoors: Life and death of the wild in winter

Doug Leier, Biologist, North Dakota Game and Fish Dept.|Jan 9, 2023

I quit blaming Mother Nature years ago for nasty weather and started pointing the finger at Old Man Winter. Not that it mattered but it seemed fair, even though we have no control over the weather. For man and beast on the prairie, a winter that starts late and ends early with a few drifts of life-bearing moisture and short cold snaps mixed in is about as much as we can ask for. Anyone who's grown up around here knows we adjust to the cold and the snow. From warming up the truck a little, to mak...

  • Big second half propels Hornets past Mavericks

    Lane Moellenkamp|Jan 9, 2023

Harvey-Wells County came out of the locker room with renewed energy, outscoring Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood 35-21 in the second half and claiming a 63-51 victory over the Mavericks in Mohall on Tuesday, January 3. The first quarter was a three-point shooting extravaganza on both sides, as Riley Morlock and Kellan Henry connected on two each for MLS and Brock Fike drained three for HWC. Morlock's second trey gave the Mavericks their largest lead of the night at 17-9, but back-to-back threes from Fik...
