Titans get big league win over CHS

Rookie Griggs/Midkota Head Coach Kyle Mehus got his first career win at the seventh place game of the Stutsman County Tournament in Jamestown.

He did that one better, though, with a 50-37 victory for the Titans over rival Carrington last Tuesday night, January 11, in Cooperstown, to earn a District 5 triumph for the first time.

And it was the long ball that helped put G-M over the hump.

Griggs/Midkota erupted for nine threes to account for nearly half of their 19 field goals. Three of those came off the shooting hand of senior guard Logan Topp, who ended his night with 16 points.

Fellow senior Jaxon Gronneberg was close behind, hitting two trifectas for six of his 14 points. Carter Spitzer also added two threes for Griggs/Midkota, now 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in District 5 play.

It was a disappointing offensive showing for the Cards (4-4, 0-1 District 5). The main scorers in the game were the junior Hudsons, Schmitz (13 points) and Topp (12). However, no other Cardinal player scored more than five points.

Carrington was playing without senior point guard Lucas Hendrickson, one of the team’s top scorers this season.

G-M aims to build momentum with this win, but a salty opponent awaits them Tuesday night in LaMoure. The L-L-M Loboes took their first loss of the season in their previous game, a 70-49 rout against fourth-ranked Enderlin, at the Barnes County Tournament in Valley City. Two nights later, they take on the M-P-B Thunder in Pingree.

For Carrington, they hope for a return to consistency, but will have to do it against a pair of tough squads, and both on the road.

Friday night, the Cards venture out of Region 3 to face the Velva Aggies, and return to District 5 for a big matchup against now sixth-ranked Ellendale on Saturday.
