Finishing out the string

Never ones to shy away from the competition, Carrington put the finishing touches on an up-and-down 10-8 regular campaign with defeats to state tournament contenders Shiloh Christian and Rugby.

The way they went about their business was night and day from one game to the next, though.

The Cardinal offense was shut down by the Skyhawks in a 66-29 loss in the final home game of the season Saturday, February 5, but Coach Andy Braaten's team took the ninth-ranked Panthers to overtime before falling, 60-52.

In both games, freshman forward Edyn Hoornaert was the leading scorer, putting up 11 points against Shiloh and a 19-point/11-rebound double-double in the loss to Rugby, to go along with five steals.

The latter game also featured Madison Johnson's fourth quarter spurt to galvanize the Cardinal comeback, in which she scored 10 of her 13 points. Emma Rindy was a force on the ball with nine steals and also ended up with a 10-point evening.

Shiloh improved to 16-4 with the win in the first game, paced by 21 points from Grace Kelly. Hailey Quam, a transfer from Wilton-Wing who played against CHS at last year's state tourney, finished with 16 points.

For Rugby, junior Mykell Heidlebaugh had 21 points, and Joran Jundt 10 more. Nine points each came from Kendyl Hager and Josephine Wolf.

Carrington started the District 5 Tournament this past Friday as the number three seed, and faced #6-seed Ellendale.
