Dru Carr got an 8-5 victory over Central Cass's Drew Urbach at 106 pounds in the consolation round match. Those three points would figure in a five-point win for the Cards, 38-33, to advance to the fifth place round and avenge two dual losses to the Squirrels this past season.
Cardinal 120-pound wrestler Nic Garber gets ready to take K/B/BC's Britton Matejovsky to the mat. Garber would get an important pin in the third period at the 4:44 mark to help the Cards beat the Honkers, 40-36, and earn the consolation title.
Carrington, in spite of their open weights, made it a productive Saturday afternoon at the State B Dual Wrestling Tournament.
The Cards bounced back from a first-round 46-18 loss to New Salem-Almont, and took the next two matches to claim the consolation championship February 19.
On the way, the Cards avenged two losses to the Central Cass Squirrels in the regular season and Region 2 Tournament, 38-33, and got a match-clinching pin to earn a tight 40-36 win over the Honkers of Kenmare/Bowbells/Burke Central for fifth place.
The final win over K-B-BC was notched by senior Brecken Lura in the 145-pound match in just 22 seconds. He ended his prep career as the all-time winningest Cardinal wrestler with 240 victories.
The first round against the second-seeded Holsteins featured just four wins for CHS, with two of those coming in the first pair of matches from Corbin Clifton and Lura. Trace Hoggarth also added a pin at 113 pounds.
Michael Clifton finished up his sparkling high school tenure with his Class B-record 47th pin in the NS-A match, but did not have a chance to add to that mark with forfeit wins in the next two duals.
Dual action opposite the Squirrels in the afternoon session was truly a punch/counterpunch affair.
An opening pin by Central Cass was followed by a fall from Kael Kovar (152) and a Logan Weninger major decision, and Jonathan Lura had another pin at 170 that would loom large in the final score.
A decision, pin and forfeit in the upper weights gave Cass 15 points to put the score at 22-21 in favor of the Cards wrapping around back to 106, and Dru Carr got a nice 8-5 win followed by a major decision from Hoggarth.
The Squirrels would get one more pin and forfeit, but Matthew Duchscherer (126) and Brecken Lura cinched up the mild upset with a pin and 9-4 victory in the finale.
For the consolation dual, it again went to Kovar, Weninger and Jonathan Lura to give CHS an early start of 10-0. From 220 to 106, the Honkers made their comeback with three straight pins, but the Cards answered right back to negate that surge with a trio of their own from Hoggarth, Nic Garber (120) and Duchscherer. The Cards dropped forfeits at 132 and 138 to trail, 36-34, and set up the stage for Brecken Lura in the final bout.
Carrington finished their season with an 8-10 record in duals.
Lisbon won their third consecutive Class B crown in the tournament, edging the Holsteins, 36-30. South Border took third with a 37-25 win over Hettinger/Scranton/Bison (S.D.)
