Softball falls to Knights in twinbill, 8-7, 14-3

The Carrington girls softball team came within three outs of their second win of the season, but the Dakota Prairie Knights got two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 win over the Cards in McVille Friday, May 6.

Game two was a close affair at 3-3 until the Knights put up 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth, and DPHS would win via the mercy rule by that score, 14-3.

Four Cardinal hitters had at least three hits in the close opening loss. Kennedy Wendel hit a triple and double, and Haley Wolsky also doubled. Eighth grader Bailey Ness added a 3-for-3 afternoon, and Isabel Wendel contributed three hits as well.

In addition, players with extra-base hits were Calleigh Hewitt and Kaydence VanRay, both with doubles.

Hewitt would end up being the losing pitcher despite a gutty effort with 132 total pitches, 74 for strikes. She had five walks while amassing six strikeouts.

At the bottom of the Knight lineup, Josie Johnson was a perfect 4-for-4, and Mya Luehring had three hits, including a double. Others with multi-hit games were Rylee Flaagan and Riley Lippert.

Nevaeh Huso had a home run and four runs batted in for Dakota Prairie in game one. The other two hits came from Daveigh Sailor and Paytan Lippert.

VanRay got the start in the circle for the Cards in game two, and did well until the fourth inning outburst from Dakota Prairie saddled her with the loss.

CHS got three runs in the top of the first against Dakota Prairie pitcher Kelby Gjovik, but the senior right-hander settled down and shut down the Cards for the final four innings. Gjovik surrendered six hits, walked three and struck out four.

Brynn Smith, who had five hits in the Cards' only win this season on May 3, was the one Carrington player in game two with multiple hits, and had two stolen bases in defeat. VanRay had a double, and the other three hits came from Isabel Wendel, Ness and Hewitt.

Carrington (1-4 overall and in Region 2) is hitting the final stretch of their condensed spring campaign, with games still to play with Pembina Co. North, Larimore and Thompson before the start of the regional tournament starting this Saturday, May 21, in Mayville. The tourney continues Monday and Tuesday, May 23-24, with the champion advancing to the Class B Softball Tournament in Fargo June 2-4.
