Lois Peterson

Lois Peterson, 83, passed away May 24, 2022, surrounded by family at Golden Acres Manor in Carrington.

Her visitation was Monday, May 30 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Her funeral service was held Tuesday, May 31 at 10:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, N.D., with Rev. Rick Loewen officiating. Clara Edwardson organist and Darwin Solberg was soloist. Her burial was at the Ellendale City Cemetery, Ellendale, N.D.

Pallbearers were Dustin Peterson, Kristin Peterson, Darin Peterson, Cally Peterson, Danielle Wachter and Mike Wachter.

Honorary bearers were Dylan Peterson, Owen Wachter, Everett Peterson and Kylie Wachter.

Lois Helen Husby was the first child born to Adolph and Helen (Michaelis) Husby on April 30, 1939, in Ellendale. She graduated from Ellendale High School in 1957.

While working as a waitress at an Ellendale café, Lois met Raymond Peterson, who had returned home from his U.S. Army tour in Korea. They fell in love and married Aug. 31, 1958, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. Ray and Lois celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2018, shortly before Ray's death.

The couple made their home in Ellendale and welcomed two children, Cheryl and Keith. In 1967, the family moved to Grand Forks, and in 1975, to Carrington, following Ray's career with Chevrolet. Lois was a homemaker, church and Dakota Central Telecommunications custodian, sold Avon and worked part-time at Super Valu in Carrington and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Ray and Lois enjoyed travel, often in the company of family, including Branson, Mo., the Pacific Northwest, Montana, New England for their 50th wedding anniversary and a Peterson family Alaskan cruise in 2011.

Lois had a special relationship with her daughter, whom she communicated with through a combination of American Sign Language and their own mother-daughter language. They enjoyed sewing and crafts projects together, and took many mother-daughter trips to sell at, and attend craft shows, including annually to their favorite, the Sheyenne Valley Arts and Crafts Festival in Fort Ransom.

Her mind was a steel trap, and no one was better than Lois with dates. This was an especially helpful skill, because she never failed to deliver that on-time birthday or anniversary card. She made the best potato salad and spaghetti.

She was strong as steel, too, quietly fighting cancer for nearly 40 years, facing the loss of a child with a mother's strength, and, in her later years, recovering from illness that amazed doctors and went beyond scientific understanding at times. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy, smiles and laughter.

Although death brings sadness and loss, we hold her joy of reunion with her husband and only son.

Lois is survived by her daughter, Cheryl, Carrington; daughter-in-law, Julie Peterson, Robinson; grandchildren, Dustin (Kristin) Peterson, Robinson, Darin (Cally) Peterson, Steele, and Danielle (Mike) Wachter, Steele; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Owen, Everett and Kylie; siblings, Rosemary Husby, Alice Husby and Bob (Judy) Husby; brother-in-law, Robert (LaVonne) Peterson; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond; son, Keith; and sister, Adele Spicer.
