Errors lead to elimination

Carrington got themselves a shot to shock the Region 3 world, but they needed to defeat the LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Loboes twice Wednesday, May 25, to accomplish that monumental feat.

Though they held the Loboes to just one hit over seven innings, the Cards' defense let them down for six errors and enabled L-L-M to return to the State Class B Tournament with a 4-1 win in the Region 3 Championship at City Park.

The hometown team got one run in the first inning against LaMoure pitcher Anthony Hanson, but that was all they could manage for the rest of the title clash.

Hanson gave up three hits over 6 2/3 innings before yielding way to Connor Johnson for the final out, and also had the lone hit in the books for the Wolves, a run-scoring single.

Those three hits for the Cards came from Grady Shipman, Noah Paulson and Josh Bickett.

Shipman did well to hold the LaMoure lineup to four runs in spite of the defensive lapses.

With the win, the Loboes (13-1) made it 13 straight wins following an opening-day loss to Thompson at Shiloh Christian on May 8. Carrington finished their season at 8-6.

LaMoure/L-M began the State B Tournament June 2-4 at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo as the top overall seed, and faced Surrey in the first round.

Other first round games pitted #2 Thompson opposite North Star, #3 Central Cass against Des Lacs-Burlington, and #4 Langdon/Edmore/Munich, the defending state champions, took on #5 Beulah.

Region Awards

Carrington had three players, Grady Shipman, Lucas Hendrickson and Hudson Schmitz, named to the All-Region 3 Team. Other players from local teams on the squad included Garrett Haakenson and Cade Stein of Midkota/DP/Lakota/GCC, and Nick Berglund and Koby Duda of SNR.

The Region 3 Senior Athlete of the Year was Corban Potts of LaMoure/L-M, and Derold Haugen was named Region 3 Coach of the Year.

2022's winner of the Eric Hewitt Iron Fist Award was Ander Azaola of Midkota/DP/Lakota/GCC, a junior foreign exchange student from Spain.

In his nomination of Azaola for the award, his coach had this to say:

"Ander has been no doubt one of the hardest workers and one of the best leaders for us this season. In all my years of coaching and playing, he has been one of the best guys to be around every day. He has been a spark for us on and off the field, and his willingness to learn has been remarkable. Ander has also been playing with a torn ACL he suffered in football. When I was notified about the injury, I asked Ander if and how he is going to be able to play on it. His response was simple, 'I've only known these guys since the beginning of the school year, but I leave after school is done, and they mean too much for me to not at least give it my best shot.'"
