L/E/M offense too much for Hornets

A low scoring first quarter turned into a runaway in Harvey as the #2-ranked Langdon/Edmore/Munich Cardinals scored 28 points in the second quarter and cruised to a 48-8 win over the Hornets at L.C. Loerch Field on Friday, August 26.

Both teams had a solid defensive effort in the opening quarter, as the Cardinals scored just once on a Jack Romfo three-yard run on L/E/M's second possession.

Leading by six heading into the second quarter, the Cardinals unleashed what could be one of the best passing games in Class B 11-man football. Rayce Worley and Cody Amble started the four touchdown second quarter by hooking up for an 81-yard strike, making the score 12-0.

An interception by Worley resulted in a five-play, 32-yard drive with Worley finding Nick Kingzett on an 11-yard strike. The PAT run by Romfo made the score 20-0.

HWC looked to have things figured out on offense as Tallen Thorson ran for 21 and then found Keaton Keller wide open for 29 more. A five yard run by Kayl Sieg was followed up by Worley's second interception, as the Hornet drive was stopped at the L/E/M nine-yard line.

The Cardinals' offense used 10 plays and covered 90 yards as Worley threw his third TD pass of the quarter, finding Markus Kingzett on a 49-yard catch and run moving the score to 28-0.

L/E/M found paydirt one more time as the second half neared an end. A nice punt return by the Cardinals put the ball at the HWC 39-yard line, but a sack by Keller resulted in a seven yard loss. After an incomplete pass, Worley found Markus Kingzett for his second touchdown in a row, this time for 46 yards and with the PAT to Dawson Hein, the score was 34-0 at the half.

With a gap of more than 30 points in the second half, the clock ran continuously except for certain plays. The Cardinals received the ball to start the second half, and promptly moved 70 yards in seven plays and scored on a Worley eight-yard TD run. The PAT kick by Alexander Gellner moved the score to 41-0.

HWC's initial second half drive was a short two play drive ending with a Theodore Romfo interception deep in HWC territory. Three plays later, Jack Romfo moved the ball over goal line and with the PAT by Gellner, the score was 48-0.

HWC got onto the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter on a nice drive. Sieg started the drive with a 17-yard burst, and finished the drive on a 32-yard scamper as the Hornets moved the ball 57 yards on five plays for the score. The PAT pass from Jaxon Feist to Brock Fike was good, making the final score 48-8.

The Cardinals moved their record to 2-0 on the season with the win. Most of the Cardinal damage was done through the air as they were 10-19 passing for 263 yards and four touchdowns.

The Hornets were led by Sieg's 134 yards on the ground. Keller led the receiving corps with 79 yards on five catches. Gabe Allmaras once again led the defensive effort with 14 tackles, while Keller chipped in with a sack and Jadyn Vollmer talled an interception.

The loss dropped HWC to 1-1 on the season.
