Douglas Roundy

Douglas "Doug" Roundy, age 81, of Carrington, N.D., passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinberg, Texas.

Doug's visitation was Tuesday, February 14 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with family present at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington, N.D., with Rev. Paul Cross officiating.

Teresa Edland was organist, and congregational hymns were "What A Friend We Have In Jesus," and "Beautiful Savior." Recorded music was "I Can Only Imagine." His burial was at the Carrington Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Tyler Beckman, Cameron Roundy, Ellen Roundy, Brittney Moravec, Tom Moravec, Emily Haen, Joe Haen, Rick Dejarlais and Randy Hagen.

Douglas Maynard Roundy was born on March 28, 1941, the son of Robert M. Roundy and Ellen Maynard Roundy in Aberdeen, S.D.

Doug attended school in Mitchell, S.D., Bismarck, N.D., and Aberdeen, S.D., graduating from high school in 1959 from Aberdeen Central High School. He attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

He then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Milbank, S.D.

On August 22, 1962, Doug was united in marriage to Patricia "Pat" Ann Chaffin at the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, S.D.

They moved to East Grand Forks, Minn., where Doug managed Chaffin's Dept. Store. They then moved to Madison, S.D., where he was part owner and managed Doug's Good Food in 1966.

He then moved to Carrington, N.D., and traveled as Account Manager for Kent Industries in North Dakota and North Western Minnesota. In 1979, Doug went into agriculture seed sales by starting his own seed company, Homestead Hybrids, selling sunflowers, corn and soybeans for a time. Then for Seedtec Intl., Agripro and Keltgen and then for Mycogen Seed under the name Roundy's Seed Sales.

Doug was active in local city government as a Councilman, Council President for 19 years, Chairman of Finance and Legal and Police and Public Works. He was also Council Representative to the Carrington Fire Department. He also served on Renaissance Zone, JDA (Job Development Authority), Tree Board and Library Board. He spent 20 years serving on the Carrington City Council.

Doug was active in Jaycee's, serving as President and District Vice President. While in Jaycee's he received the John H. Armbruster Keyman Award.

He was also active in the Carrington Lions Club, serving as Treasure and Dist. 5NE Treasure and also on the Dist. 5NE Cabinet as Chairman for Leader Dogs for the Blind and Service Dogs for America. Doug was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellow for his work in the Lions Club. He served on South Central Dakota Regional Council Loan Committee, Board of Directors for Service Dogs for America and the Carrington Cemetery Board.

Doug was also active in his Trinity Lutheran Church as usher, Sunday School Teacher, Church Council as Chairman of the Trustees and helped with the Church Bulletin Committee.

In later years, he was a North Dakota Winter Texan, spending winters in Texas with his special friend Elizabeth Ann Parent.

Doug will be remembered and deeply missed by a son, Troy (Sheryl) Roundy and a daughter, Latricia (Dallas) Beckman; grandchildren, Tyler (Katie) Beckman, Cameron (Ellen) Roundy, Brittney (Tom) Moravec and Emily (Joe) Haen; great-grandkids, Sutton and Stella Roundy, Kimber and Drake Moravec; a special friend, Elizabeth "Betty" parent; sister-in-laws, Wendy (Rick) Desjarlais and Carol (Ken) Axemaker and many nieces and nephews; Betty's kids Jody Wittmayer, Rodger (Judy) Young, Sherri Ekren, Stacy Long; Betty's grandchildren Brandon, Michael, Marilyn , Catherine, William, Shannon, LaWren, and Kendraya.

He was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Pat of 48 years; his mother, Ellen (Chancey) Nellis; his father, Bob (Edna) Roundy and his faithful companion, Smiley the golden retriever.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Service Dogs for America and to the Carrington Cemetery.
