Cards victorious, Titans fall in first round at District 5

The Independent-area District 5 teams had their first round of play at the opening postseason tournament Saturday, February 25, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Postponements related to the previous Region 3 Girls' Basketball Tournament pushed the start of the boys' district event back one day to Saturday, and moved the subsequent rounds to last Monday and Tuesday.

Carrington, playing as the number two seed, took a 66-29 win over seventh-seeded Oakes, while the Griggs/Midkota Titans, seeded sixth, fell to Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier, the number three seed, 65-44.

First round scoring for the Cards was paced by junior guard Grady Shipman's 16 points. Hudson Schmitz finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Jack Erickson added 13 points in the win.

Xavier Vossler's eight points, along with seven from Max Walock, led the Tornadoes (4-16).

The Titans had to contend with E-K-M's one-two punch of Braeden Kinzler (24 points) and Jacob Nitschke (18 points, 11 rebounds) in a 21-point defeat at the Rebels' hands.

Carter Spitzer led G-M (8-12) with 15 points. Wyatt Spickler was one point away from double digits with nine, and Eli Larson and Kyle Johnson tallied eight points each.

Larson was the top rebounder for the Titans with six boards, and Johnson, Spickler and Latrell Rainey each brought in five.
