Hornets a-buzz for indoor track

The Harvey-Wells County Hornets started their indoor season off with a bang on Saturday, March 25, at the unofficial NDSU Class B Indoor Meet, held at the Shelly Ellig Track and Field Complex on the campus of NDSU in Fargo.

The Hornets started practice on Tuesday, February 28, and currently have 48 students participating in grades 7-12. Five seniors return for their final season, and include Larissa Arnold, Jenna Green, Kamryn Sanders, Gabe Allmaras and Harrison Lies.

Leading the Hornets on the day for the boys was Tallen Thorson. The returning 300-meter hurdle champ and 110 high hurdle runner-up won the 60 meter hurdles, defeating the next nearest competitor by .34 seconds. Thorson also ran a leg on the 4x200-meter relay which placed fifth. Other members of the team were Kayl Sieg, Quinton Deede and Carson Heilman.

Jadyn Vollmer and Noah Ziegler also found the top eight, with Vollmer placing seventh in the 60 hurdles and Ziegler finishing the day out for HWC with a sixth place effort in the triple jump.

Christalea Wagner led HWC in the girls division, as the sophomore placed second in the 400 dash with an outstanding time of 1:03.08. Wagner finished behind only NR-S standout Kelsie Belquist, who burned up the track with a 59.02 time.

Wagner was also on the 4x200 relay team that finished in sixth place with a 1:56.32 time. Joining Wagner on the relay team were Larissa Arnold, Sanders and Breanna Heilman.

The Hornets went with a youthful group in the 4x400. Sanders, a senior, was joined by eighth grader Braylee Keller and seventh graders Emersyn Wolfe and Addisyn Faul to finish in the seventh place position.
