Shipman's gem stymies Loboes; CHS routs KC

In his junior season as the Carrington staff ace, Grady Shipman has seemed to have two types of pitching outings.

Effective wildness, or dialed-in confidence.

Shipman had the latter going on in LaMoure Monday afternoon, May 8, striking out 13 L-L-M Loboes hitters and needing just one run to register a 1-0 thriller against one of the region's traditionally-salty lineups.

The only hit registered against the hard-throwing righty was in the third inning, when the Loboes' Tate Mart reached on a two-out single.

In fact, Shipman's stint saw just one LaMoure player reach as far as third base, Anthony Hanson in the fourth on a walk and two stolen bases. After Hanson got on, Shipman would strike out the side to end the threat.

Jake Otto scored the only run the Cards would need in the third inning, racing around the bases on an errant pickoff attempt that allowed him to score all the way from first base following a walk.

Carrington had five hits in the win, two of those from Jack Erickson. The other three came off the bats of Shipman, Hudson Schmitz and Max Whitman.

LaMoure/L-M's Jacob Nitschke pitched about as well as one could in defeat, allowing the one run, walking one and striking out three.

The loss for the Loboes (5-1, 5-1) was their first in Region 3 play, as well as in the spring campaign.

The next day, it was Shipman's turn again to play hero, though the drama was much less in a 10-0 win over Kidder County in Steele.

The left-handed swinger hit his third home run this season, a two-run shot, for a walkoff win in five innings.

Both the L-L-M and Kidder County games were played with the Cards as the home team, as field conditions at City Park were too wet to contest the matchups there.

CHS hit the ground running with a five-run first inning and never looked back. In the victory, Schmitz, Kael Kovar and Corbin Clifton all had multi-hit games.

Josh Bickett threw all five innings, scattering four hits while fanning six and walking two. Isaiah Oster took the loss for the Wolves, throwing 4 2/3 innings in the mercy rule-shortened affair and giving up all 10 runs, eight of them earned.

The Kidder County (7-6, 5-3) hits were produced by Collin Zimmerman, Jace Larson, Trey Silbernagel and Preston Fischer.

Carrington (10-2 overall, 7-1 Region 3) has at least the number two seed for regional play locked up, with a pair of league games still to play against Nelson County/Midkota.

Last Friday, the Cards were scheduled to play in Thompson against the Tommies and Park River Area for two non-region games.

This Tuesday, May 16, the Cards and NC-M will play a varsity doubleheader at City Park for the final Region 3 counters, beginning at 4 and 6 p.m.

The region tournament will begin at New Rockford's Jim Johnson Field on May 22, and continue to May 24. The tournament champion will advance to the State B Tournament in Minot June 1-3.
