The dive to succeed: Weninger takes 400 title; Cardinal boys finish fourth

Carrington's Logan Weninger, left, and Hillsboro/Central Valley's Henry Nelson, right, gave every last ounce of effort in their bodies down the last 10 meters of the 400-meter dash finals Saturday, May 27 at the State Track Meet from the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck. Weninger and Nelson, their energy all but spent, stretched for the finish line. . . which leads to one of the most dramatic scenes one might ever see in a state championship race. Both Weninger and Nelson go airborne in a Superman-style full extension across the finish. When the scoreboard results were posted, it was the junior, Weninger, winning his first-ever event crown in a time of 49.71 seconds, .03 ahead of Nelson's 49.74 time. It is the third shot of a five-shot sequence featuring the two runners.
Logan Weninger’s gritty performances, along with his flair for the dramatic, will be the lasting memory of the 2023 North Dakota State Track Meet for the Carrington boys’ team.
Fortunately, he wasn’t alone in his time in the Missouri River sun.
