  • Field and Garden: Moisture conditions vary as crop matures

Jeff Gale, NDSU Extension Agent, Foster County|Sep 4, 2023

“Have you found aphids in your soybean fields?” I asked the farmer. “I haven’t looked,” was the reply. “But if there were any, last night’s rain would have washed them off.” I was surprised by the farmer’s response. We’d only gotten about a third of an inch in Carrington the previous evening. I didn’t expect that amount of rain to have much effect on soybean aphids. I asked the farmer, “How much rain did you get?” “Two inches,” was his reply. When a storm system passes through, I typically c...

Don't let a bumper crop of basil go to waste. Preserve its flavor and zest with proper storage and preservation. Extend the life of fresh basil by removing any discolored leaves and cutting the bottom of the stems off at an angle. Set the stems in a jar with an inch or two of water. Loosely cover it with a plastic bag and set it on the kitchen counter out of direct sunlight. Change the water every few days. Basil stored this way is conveniently located for use and can last for five days or...

  • Do you want the good or bad news?

    Nathan Price|Sep 4, 2023

Sometimes I wonder what people expect from local newspapers like the one I work for, and from local reporters like myself. While readers regularly thank us for our great coverage, we've also been told we're too negative, and that our only job should be to "build up" our community with positive news. Recently I was reminded what it means to be a good reporter, and why I work for two of the best newspapers in North Dakota. Some may have heard about the small-town newspaper in Kansas that was...

Just take a drive through the Badlands or visit Medora and you’ll see all kinds of vehicles and license plates from out of state. But tourism isn’t limited to those two areas. We have Lake Metigoshe, Fort Ransom, Garrison Dam, Devils Lake, the Pembina Gorge is now designated as a state park and others. It doesn’t stop with tourism. People from out of state come here for busines...

  • Guest: A small home is a happy home

    Tom Purcell|Sep 4, 2023

Houses are getting smaller again — which is going to make many Americans happier. Americans faced with high mortgage rates and a shortage of affordable homes for sale are opting for new, smaller homes that do not have dining rooms, living rooms, spare bedrooms and even bathtubs, reports the Wall Street Journal. Builders are building smaller homes partly to give cost-constrained buyers a more affordable option. But it’s mostly because it’s the only way home builders can turn a reasonable profit,...

  • Dakota Gardener: Tree sports

    Joe Zeleznik, NDSU Extension forester|Sep 4, 2023

Did you ever watch ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” when you were younger? I remember those Saturday afternoons, seeing some pretty unique competitions – power lifting, cliff diving and even barrel jumping. My favorite was the lumberjack competitions. Most of the events involved chopping logs with axes, or cutting logs with hand-powered crosscut saws or chainsaws. Log rolling in a pond or pool was common, as was the speed climb. The current speed climbing events use either a 60-foot pole or a 90-fo...
