Tommies hold off HWC, win 28-22

The Thompson Tommies held off a late surge by the Harvey-Wells County Hornets to pick up their third win and stay undefeated in a huge 28-22 victory in a Region 2 11B football game in Thompson on Friday, September 2.

The Hornets received the ball first, and executed their first drive offensive play chart to perfection. The Hornets went 77 yards on 14 plays, and used eight runs and six passes in the drive.

HWC picked up huge pass plays to Keaton Keller, Gabe Allmaras and Brock Fike on the drive, but it was a pass from Tallen Thorson to Allmaras for a six-yard score that put the Hornets up, 6-0.

The game played out nicely for HWC, as their long sustained drive and another long drive for Thompson kept the Tommies off the scoreboard in the first quarter.

Thompson wasted little time, though, in the second, as Jake Starcevic plunged over from three yards out on the first play of the second quarter and the quarterback also took in the PAT run for a Tommie 8-6 lead.

HWC used the big play effect for their second drive of the night, as Thorson scrambled and found Jaxon Feist on a 59-yard scoring strike on the third play of the drive. The HWC PAT from Thorson to Keaton Keller gave the Hornets a 14-8 lead early in the second quarter.

The Tommies also had quick strike potential, and used that for their next score also. On the fifth play, Starcevic found Max Roller down field for a 51- yard score. The PAT failed, and the game was tied at 14.

After a couple of stalled drives, the Tommies had a solid drive going, but the Hornets' Jadyn Vollmer's interception at the HWC 10 yard line stopped the momentum.

The momentum changed quickly, as the Tommies forced a fumble on HWC's first play, and two plays later Starcevic scored from six yards out. The PAT pass from Starcevic to Brody Gibson made the score 22-14.

The Hornets' last chance in the first half resulted in a nice drive down to the Tommie 22-yard line, but with time running down, HWC turned the ball over and Thompson ran the clock out with an eight- point halftime lead.

Thompson found the end zone one more time late in the third quarter. The Tommies forced the Hornets into turning the ball over on downs at the HWC 40-yard line, and five plays later, Starcevic scored from two yards out. The ever-important PAT was missed and the Tommie lead was 28-14.

HWC got on the scoreboard for the final time midway through the fourth, as Allmaras took the ball in from five yards out. The PAT run by Thorson was good, and HWC trailed by just six at 28-22. The big play on the drive was a 55- yard pass from Thorson to Sieg.

The Thompson defense was just strong enough over the final minutes to hold HWC out of the endzone, sealing the six-point victory.

Thorson had a nice game at quarterback, as the sophomore was 10-of-19 for 188 yards. The Hornets got most of their rushing yards on the opening drive, but Sieg did lead the team with 45 yards on 11 carries. Allmaras led the receiving corps with three catches for 55 yards, while Sieg had two grabs for 58 yards.

Sieg led the defense with 12 tackles, while Allmaras and Harrison Lies chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. Lies also had a sack on the night, and Vollmer and Feist had interceptions.

The win moved Thompson to 3-0 on the season, while the Hornets dropped to 1-2 overall.
