Cards take silver bracket title at DL-B Invite

Playing in the largest and most prestigious Class B tournament of the season, the Carrington Cardinals made a strong two-day showing at the Des Lacs-Burlington Laker Invitational September 30-October 1.

On the first day of play in Pool D, the Cards took a split-set win on overall points against Powers Lake, 47-39 (22-25 and 25-14), and defeated Rugby in two sets, 25-22 and 25-21.

Saturday pool action pitted CHS against Langdon/Edmore/Munich, and the southern Cardinals dropped two 19-25 sets to L/E/M. They then had their biggest struggle of the event, falling to Central Cass by scores of 14-25 and 15-25.

Carrington's 2-2 record in the round robin slate earned themselves a first-round bye in the Silver (consolation) Bracket, where they faced Beulah and would sweat out a 26-24 win in set one before blowing away the Miners in set two, 25-10. They would advance to the semifinal round against Minot Bishop Ryan, and played tough in a 25-21, 25-23 victory.

For the consolation crown, they met a familiar opponent in District 5 rival LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. The Cards would get a small measure of vengeance for their four-set loss in league play earlier this season, though it would take coming back from a 29-31 first set loss well in extra points to take the final two games, 25-10 and 15-9.

The 5-2 showing for Carrington improved their overall record for the season to 15-5.

One other local team, New Rockford-Sheyenne, competed at the Laker Invite. They would finish with a record of 1-4-1 for the weekend, with a win over the Ray Jays in the first round of the silver bracket and a true 41-41 tie on points against Beulah in Pool B to their credit.

Linton-HMB won the overall tournament championship, defeating Central Cass in the Gold Bracket finals, 25-21 and 25-20. Third place went to Dickinson Trinity, a three-set winner over L/E/M (22-25, 25-20, 15-11).
