    The Harvey-Wells County Hornets' track and field team had some great finishes at the recently-held state Track and Field meet at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck. Many of the performances from HWC were season-bests, and some were even personal bests as the Hornet boys scored in four events and finished in a tie for 10th overall in the boys' division.     The Carrington boys’ golf team traveled southeast to the Red River Valley to get their hacks in at a meet in Casselton Wednesday, May 24. The Cards shot a team total of 400, 76 strokes behind meet winner and host Central Cass. The Squirrels’ Jake Thompson shot a 78 on his home course to earn medalist honors.     Twenty-eight years ago, her mother put her Midkota Mustang teammates on her back as Most Valuable Player to win the 1995 Class B girls' basketball championship. Now, Megan (Fiechtner) Sparrow's daughter, Daisy, accomplished something similar for the Central McLean (Underwood/Turtle Lake-Mercer/McClusky) Cougars at the 2023 state track meet in Bismarck.     The Carrington Runnings store, members from the Carrington Garden Club and the Foster County Extension staff cooperated to use their resources and talents to teach Carrington elementary third grade students about gardening topics. The program was held at the Carrington School. Runnings donated drop cloths, potting soil, planting containers and bedding plants for each student to take home and grow over the summer.   • Freedom 5K set for July 1; registration open now!

    Kick off the Independence Day weekend with the Freedom 5K in downtown New Rockford. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the Transcript Publishing office, 817 Central Avenue in New Rockford. Race time is 8 a.m. Early bird registration is $25 for adults, and $20 for youth 12 and under through Monday, June 19.
