He explained that the bill HB1307 offers a grant from the North Dakota State Legislature called "Back the Blue Grant" to help in recruiting and...

  • Dakota Gardener: Protecting trees from Bambi

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Dec 4, 2023

Deer are very active now. They are moving around, scraping bark and munching on trees in our landscapes and orchards. My epic battle versus Bambi was in a college orchard in Bismarck. Two days after planting 60 trees, our team of gardeners visited the orchard to give the trees a drink of water. It was shocking. Every tree was pruned by hungry deer. Everyone got mad – but not me. I don’t get mad. I get even. When a critter invades my territory, I seek swift justice! The most effective way to sto...

  • It's small business season

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 4, 2023

The countdown to Christmas is on. As I write this, December 25 is exactly 27 days away. That means I have a lot of shopping to do, and very little time. I came across this meme on Facebook a couple of weeks ago, and it really hit me. It read, “Big companies won’t notice your purchase over the next couple months. But small businesses will, and it might even change their life.” It’s true. Small, independent local businesses are the heartbeat of our economy. And their survival is integral to our...

  • Upside Down Under: Cellular dead spots...

    Marvin Baker|Dec 4, 2023

In this day and age you wouldn’t think something so simple as cellular telephone coverage would be so spotty, but it is. There are numerous “dead spots” across North Dakota, and depending on where you experience this, you sometimes have to shake your head because it really shouldn’t be rocket science. Joel Heitkamp talked about this on KFGO radio one day, but I’m not sure anything was ever done to rectify the situation. I personally don’t remember where all the spots are in the state, but...

  • Guest: Tipping demands have gotten out of control

    Tom Purcell|Dec 4, 2023

With every purchase you make — at coffee shops, fast food restaurants, chain stores and more – you are presented with a digital payment screen that asks you to leave a tip. On one hand you feel guilted into leaving a tip, because the person who just rang up your purchase is staring directly at you. On the other hand, you wonder how in the world did we get to a place in which workers in so many different roles – even plumbers and mechanics – are suddenly expecting extra money just for doing their...

  • New rules this year regarding foul shots

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 4, 2023

The move from two classes of basketball to three in the state of North Dakota is a momentous step towards what is hoped to be competitive balance. It's not the only new thing hoop fanatics will notice this season, however. The "one-and-one" situation, in which a team is awarded a free throw upon the opposition committing the seventh team...

For the first time since the 1963 season, there will be three divisions of basketball in North Dakota instead of two, and the Cardinals have moved from among the higher enrollment Class B schools into one of the smaller programs in the new Division A. Coach Andy Braaten will embark on what is officially a quarter century...
