Sales tax collections continue to rise in the Central City. In 2022, the City of Carrington collected $943,828.37 in sales tax revenue, according to Auditor Jennifer Gast. See the chart at right that shows the trend over the past 5 years. Sales tax dollars are separated into three funds: infrastructure, economic development and offset specials/debt...

    Leasa A. Lura|Jan 23, 2023

The Foster County Commission learned this information at their meeting last week. During the meeting, held on Tuesday, January 17, commissioner Becky Hagel reported that the candidate they made an offer to has a master’s degree in emergency management, but has never worked in the position. She also said the candidate has very little grant writing experience, but is willing to l...

  • Know when to hold 'em

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The lure of easy money, while sitting at the table with five cards in your hand, chips stacked in front of you and thousands of dollars riding on a single play, is undeniable to the thrill-seeking gambler. But to hear Carrington resident Arlie Brandvold tell it, it's not necessarily the most high-flying lifestyle to undertake. "It's definitely not as glorious as it seems," he laughed. "Most nights, you get home late at night and just sleep all day." This past season, Brandvold had one of his...

  • Campaign reignited to attract workers to state

Michael Standaert, North Dakota News Cooperative|Jan 23, 2023

Most people just want to feel wanted. For Travis High, a friendly phone call with a relocation help desk representative was enough for him to drop everything and drive from Washington state to start a new life in North Dakota. "North Dakota was the first one to reach out and say, 'Hey, we want you here,' so I just started driving," High said of his relocation this past July. High, now a technician at ProIT in Minot, was the first of nine individuals or families to emerge through the pipeline of...

    Leasa A. Lura|Jan 23, 2023

The counties and cities within the state of North Dakota hold many interesting news stories. Here are just a few of the feature stories that others are reading in communities around the state. • Books & Bits: A library's collection reflects its community

    Michele Seil, Carrington City Librarian|Jan 23, 2023

If you regularly follow regional and state news, you’ve likely heard about a book that is causing controversy in a couple of libraries in the state. Today I’m not weighing in on the merits of this book; instead, I wanted to share some insights into how libraries select books and other materials that are in their collections. The process of adding material to a library – called collection development – is rooted in a library’s mission statement. Carrington City Library’s mission statement b...

  • Guest: Stove debate a real gas

    Tom Purcell|Jan 23, 2023

I love my gas stove — almost as much as I love my Weber gas grill. So I became curious this past week when I heard that a commissioner in one of our ever-expanding federal-government agencies discussed a possible ban on natural gas stoves. As the story goes, Richard Trumka Jr., a U.S. Consumer Product Safety commissioner, told Bloomberg that gas stoves are a hidden health hazard and that “products that can’t be made safe can be banned.” Bloomberg says that 40% of America’s homes use gas stove...

  • Upside Down Under: Does technology make us lazy?. . .

    Marvin Baker|Jan 23, 2023

After going through a couple of major technological changes in my journalism career as well as other changes observed, I have to wonder if it’s making us lazy? And since the pandemic, work at home has become “a thing.” People who have the right jobs don’t even go to work anymore. They stay at home and knock out their job on a computer. I can certainly say that life for a journalist has gotten much easier since the early 1960s when the lin-o-type was the way to get the paper published. Today,...

  • Perspective: Cutting taxes starves public services

    Lloyd Omdahl|Jan 23, 2023

Looking at the tax cut proposals now being debated in the legislature, maybe it’s time to revert back to a territory. Apparently, we don’t want the state to accept the responsibilities of providing minimum support for public services. States are supposed to be communities with common interests. In North Dakota, it seems like frontier thinking of starving the public to benefit individuals prevails in the legislature. The tax cuts being proposed will do nothing to raise the quality of roads, edu...

  • Patriot missiles: Cards sustain 65-53 defeat to May-Port-CG

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

The length and height of the May-Port-CG Patriots caused no end of problems early for the Carrington Cardinal boys' basketball team Tuesday night, January 17. Even down 20 points in the third quarter, the level of fight in the Cards never dwindled, and they threatened to single digits on several occasions before ultimately taking a 65-53 loss to the Pats in the East Gym. The shooting stroke of MPCG's Xyler Carlson, along with the matchup problem presented by 6'6" guard Landon Koenig, was on...

  • A tough nut to crack: Cards routed by Squirrels in girls/boys doubleheader

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Two top-10 squads entertained the Carrington Cardinals in their trip to Casselton for their annual twinbill with the Central Cass Squirrels. For the fifth-ranked Cardinal girls, it was a painful crash down to earth, as the furry acorn-hoarders knocked the Cards out of the tree of unbeatens with a 65-32 loss. It wasn't any better in the boys' game, with the second-rated Squirrels having their way with their CHS counterparts, 63-28. In game one, Carrington stayed somewhat close in the first...

  • Thunder sweep Strasburg-Zeeland at Civic Center

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Both the M-P-B boys and girls were in action for District 6 play, with their traditional neutral-court showdown with Strasburg-Zeeland at the Jamestown Civic Center last Tuesday night, January 17. And, as has been in recent years, the Thunder didn't have much difficulty with the Clippers, as the girls took a 56-16 win and the boys followed by taking the night game, 51-23. Isabel Schmidt, Allison Thomas and Lilly Bohl combined for seven treys and half of the Thunder's total scoring output,...

  • #1 Honkers survive Cards' challenge

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

When the chance to prove yourself is given, you take it, and records can be thrown out the window. Carrington had an open date on their schedule with the decision to withhold their varsity from facing Barnes County North earlier in the week, and instead elected to take on the number one team in the state at Bismarck State College Friday night, January 13. The Kenmare/Bowbells Honkers needed a spurt to upend a Cardinal team still smarting from a 33-point loss to Central Cass the day before, and...

  • Titans fall to Ellendale, give Loboes scare in loss

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 23, 2023

Doubleheaders were the in-thing for the Griggs/Midkota Titan basketball teams, and Griggs County Central High School was the venue for all four games played January 13 and 17 opposite District 5 opponents Ellendale and LaMoure/Litchville-Marion. The unbeaten Cardinal boys stayed that way with a 58-37 win over the Titans, but G-M used every ounce of their fighting spirit four nights later to nearly pull off an upset over the Loboes, ultimately going down to defeat, 48-44. Brady Haugen scored 13...
